I was just about to start working on my project (Which I have been working on for WEEKS) and just before it opened, it said, File cannot be read, may be damaged.
Cannot find key.
NOOOOO! I spent a long time on that! How can I get it back?!?!

It may be a 1.4 file you are trying to open in 1.3 . . .

Sounds like an error that can't be avoided...

OMG I so feel your pain, I had that problem once. ): Sadly, it cannot be fixed.
In order to avoid it, make sure that when you're saving a project, you wait until the box thing comes up before exiting. In my case, the problem occured as a result of me closing Scratch before my project was saved.
It is also very wise to do backups of your projects time from time.

That happens to me ALL THE TIME. I have a solution for you (It can't get your project back, but it can save your future projects.) Save the project two times under different names each time you save it, and make sure it is FULLY SAVED before you close Scratch. This is what I do, so if it can't open the project, you have the same project saved to a different file that you can safely open :3 It does work, because on several occasions I could open one but not the other.

Do you think that this [url removed by moderator] would work or is it gonna give me a virus?

I don't know about the virus part...but I doubt very much if it will work on a Scratch file. There is no way they would know what the format for a Scratch project...it's not a well known format.

That's too bad - Do you use any file backup programs?
Do you have a PC or a Mac?

I have a PC, no 1.3 and Paddle2see, it has a special website for scratch projects. It does!

I wouldn't trust that, lots of people feed off of others dling things like that, and then you get spyware/adware. World of Trust(A very trustworthy site rater) has it rated as "Reliability < 50" so don't do that! It's most likely a scam, if you went to the site get malwarebytes from here.
Never trust things like this, unless you get them from a VERY trustworthy site. Also, if your using firefox, go to http://addons.mozilla.com/firefox and search for World of Trust and get the addon, and check sites before accessing them!
Trust me, I've had lots of experience with these things.

PS-If you haven't done a ton of stuff since this happened, and your on windows, press the start button, go to accessories, system tools, system restore, and then once your in it don't change any options just his Next or OK and then choose the date this happened and do restore, I would NOT suggest this if you have done edits recently, as it might get rid of the stuff that you've done since this happened!

I've sent an email into the Scratch Develpment team to see what they think about the service...let's wait and see if they have any thoughts to offer...it looks kind of questionable to me.

My understanding of System Restore is that it does NOT restore personal files...it only restores system files. So it wouldn't help with your Scratch project.

Sorry for having to edit your post and removing the website link: there have been reports of the website having unreliable vendor service and has been rated unsafe. So, in the meantime, I think it's best to wait on Paddle2See's suggestion before proceeding further.

Well here is what John says:
Unfortunately, corrupted project files are usually not recoverable.
One clue is the size of the project file. If it's small, the data is
almost certainly lost. :-(
Concerning the service website that says they can fix it, John has this to say:
From looking at the website, I would guess that they've just
collected the file extensions for every type of file in the universe
so they can offer to recover any file. It may or may not be a scam,
but it's likely to be expensive and to require sending in the user's
hard drive.
John also offered to take at look at the file, if you want to attach it to an email and send it to help@scratch.mit.edu - ask to have it forwarded to John M on the development team. He did say that it wasn't likely that it could be recovered though, but he would be happy to take a look at it.

Here's the reality of 'key not found' errors:
They occur when the project requests an aspect of scratch that does not exist.
Usually, if this happens, there is good news: The project is not totally gone.
If it is, there will be a bad header error.
Avoiding all the technical stuff, I may be able to splice it into a good file and recover it.
Send me the file to the streak email ([e-mail removed by moderator]), or upload it and reply with the url, and I may be able to do this. I have been able to recover one of my own from a worse 'a primative has failed' error this way, so your case looks promising.
NOTE: If you plan to try this yourself, you must use a binary editor, with file comparison support. Notepad will not work.

You can use the Report button on your topic post. You can ask in there. But before I knew this, I asked in a post too...
Glad to know so many people have tried to help you and that it's under control now.
