You know, while reading this thread, I'm just a bit surprised to find out the outcry of the opposition to Jonathan's post on the basis that the 'Text-Based Games' forum is 'fun'. It makes me a bit worried that this forums, and not Scratch projects, is slowly becoming the basis of entertainment on Scratch.

That's a very good point: People don't want the Text-Based Games to be removed because it's fun. That's horrible!

There's only one reason why the Text-Based Games (and Inspiration and More) should be kept. The same reason they were created: to stop games and things appearing on All About Scratch and more. But this problem is easily remedied: forum moderators can simply delete or close the topics. People will learn not to start them.

NOOOOOO!
Dont delete this forum!!!!!
This forum gives ideas kinda like inspiration and more! It keeps our minds free and brings out creativity, and that helps us make awesome projects!
Jonathanpb, you are very boring. Even your name is boring. If your teacher or something made you choose that name, i understand, but it will always be boring.
Lemme just quote something that makes me restate that you are boring:

If you want Inspiration and More, go to the forum with that exact name.

I know my username is boring, but it's nice and simple. And have you ever thought about Andrés? His username is andresmh. So if you're insulting me about my username, you're also insulting Andrés.  smile

Please stop your insults. They are quite amusing to read (honestly), but they're really rude. If I wanted a truckload of insults, I would have asked for it.

Yes, quite really.

No, I don't, both of you.

That's quite rude. First of all, if you want inspiration, go to Inspiration and More. You'll find plenty. Here at Text-Based Games, you'll get games. Second, that was quite rude, saying I was boring. Even my username is boring! Now, you may think I and my username are boring (in fact, I think my username is boring), but that's just your opinion. Just as I have my opinion that the Text-Based Games should be deleted. And if you want to insult my username, you're also insulting Andrés. For your information, I'm talking about the powerful andresmh. Go on, tell him you think his username is idiotic. Tell me what he says. Third, I think that it was horrible because people care about their own fun, and not about the Scratch Community! Tell me, which is more important: helping everyone that does Scratch and things, or playing games? Answer me! Fourth, I am a kid. Seriously. I just seem to think a bit more of the Scratch Community than others... like you. Fifth, you are very rude.

You're all mean... seriously. How would you like it? Having people insult you just because you voice your opinions?

Please...

Sorry! *blushes* I know that I'm really annoyed, but I shouldn't yell at people that much...

I think that's better now.

I just realized that you didn't edit the post yourself, so that gave me a question: do you always edit posts, or do you tell the person asking them to change their posts sometimes?

Re: Should I suggest that the Text-Based Games be deleted?

Some things I think should happen:
1. Don't count posts in from Text-based games. Alot of the topics are just ways to inflate post counts, such as whoever posts last wins, and Can we get to 10,000. I see poeple like Blade-Edge and Robot-Kitty with counts of over 3000 I know that if the ones in this forum didn't count, they would have around 300. It just makes it way to easy to spam.
2. I think that those pointless topics as mentioned above are a waste of space on the servers. The team actually has to pay for server space, and 10,000 posts of "1,2,3..." doesn't help it at all. That money/space could be more focused on helping scratch.
3. Without either Inspiration/Text Games, the Scratch team would make alot of people angry. However, it would also focus scratch onto the programming language, and make it a more tightly knit community. Like Archmage said, you can create another forum for your games, there are free services online for this.

I may have more thoughts later, thats just for now.

Also, To all those people who keep insulting Johnathon, lay off. Don't be the person who runs him down. What Would Jesus Do? Or, better yet, What Would You Do If Jesus Was Standing Right Next To You? (Sorry, and inside joke from yesterday. I will shut up now.)

Re: Should I suggest that the Text-Based Games be deleted?

I just love commenting on points.

1. I saw something on that in the suggestions, and I guess I approve... if people want a signature, they'll have to be helpful.
2. Ouchie! I'd hate to pay for all that. Think about it! All these useless posts, and who has to pay for it? The good Scratch Team. I feel sorry for them...
3. The Inspiration and More could stay, though. I think it actually is meaningful, but hopefully people wouldn't bring games into it. But who cares if the people can't have their fun and games? The forums are for helping each other. It would leave us with a bunch of true, loyal Scratchers, and the forums will be a better place.
And listen to Archmage... now that's an idea.

TheSaint wrote:

Yeah, people! Think about how you would feel. Read all the points if you haven't, and think... and perhaps place your own points. Then I can comment on them!

Yep.  big_smile

I'm serious. The reasons?
1. People often spend their lives posting in here. Don't!
2. The Scratch Forums are for helping others (All About Scratch and New Scratch Members), suggesting things (Suggestions), reporting bugs (Troubleshooting), and more. What's the use in the Text-Based Games? People don't post for good reasons, they post for their fun. Grrr!
3. There's no need for it if you want to RPG and things. Projects or galleries may be better for this. You actually can see something, whether one project or plenty.
4.

Paddle2See wrote:

Actually....there are some days when I agree with you.  This website is for supporting Scratch...the fact of the matter is, the Text-Based Games take a fair amount of monitoring which is time and effort spent away from actually helping people do Scratch.

Thank you.

There's only one reason why the Text-Based Games (and Inspiration and More) should be kept. The same reason they were created: to stop games and things appearing on All About Scratch and more. But this problem is easily remedied: forum moderators can simply delete or close the games and RPGs. People will learn not to start them.

People that actually agree (or think the Text-Based Games are a waste of people's lives) follow. Take a look! It's great:
archmage (thinks that plenty of posts come from here, which is a waste)
cheddargirl (thinks that it's a handy way to get signatures and posts. Also thinks it's useless, no point, and nothing to do with Scratch (Good on you!)
Chrischb (agrees with everyone)
illusionist (agrees with archmage and thinks that playing the Text-Based Games is becoming a big no-no)
Jonathanpb (Read above)
Maki-Tak (thinks that everyone gets tons of posts when all they do is RPG. And also thinks that the forums are becoming a social network instead of for helping Scratchers)
MyRedNeptune (thinks the forums were better before the Text-Based Games and the Inspiration and More. Five gummy bears for you!)
Paddle2See (thinks that it takes up useless time moderating and is not helping people about Scratch)
TheSaint (thinks it's useless)

What do you think? If enough people support this (which would be really unexpected), I'll list your names with mine and suggest this. The rest of you should stock up on tissues. If not... then I'll leave it at that.

Some of the people you mentioned are COMPLETE hypocryts. some of them started THEIR OWN text based games, and hang around in the text based game section.

Here are my views on what you said.

1. Move the topics to a separate forum then they will only be counted on the other forum

2. Forum posts don't take up too much space. The projects uploaded to the site would take much much more space.

3. They wouldn't be angry if they still had a place to chat. Just have a link at the bottom of the forums for OFF TOPIC and have it link to the other forum. Most kids here don't really have anything technical to share in the forums but for people who are searching for this kind of discussion it would be a pain to just find people talking about RPGs and whatnot.

Re: Should I suggest that the Text-Based Games be deleted?

I can agree with your points but i think destroying TBG's all together is a bit silly an off topic area would be brilliant for just chattting although i agree with threads like last one to post wins etc. etc. TBG's should NOT be things like that, mods should delete these threads on sight things like BAN!!! could stay because in best case scenario's people use their wits, its the same with MY style of RPG where levelling is pointless you should create your charecter and know his/her's limits and when fighting another player try and OUTWIT them not just go "i stab you in the chest you are dead" like i've seen and MRN unless you were told to do TBG moderating you did have a choice i'm sorry  sad
Thats my rambling done and sorry about being shouty earlier in the thread i was serioudly just a bit shocked by the notion (i do agree about the posts thing but maybe not remove it completely like 5posts in TBG=1 post normally?)

Go ahead, suggest it. I'll laugh as it gets shot down
You won't change the forums, so stop pretending that anything will even happen if you suggest it

Your post seems to be quite rude. Please be respective and polite with other users on Scratch. We don't want this discussion to turn into a flame war.

http://i52.tinypic.com/5es7t0.png I know what you're thinking! "Neptune! Get rid of those filthy advertisements and give us back the Zarathustra siggy, you horrible person!" Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

People will learn not to start them.

big-bang! You were the one who started up the Text-Based Games! What an honor!
If the Text-Based Games gets deleted, I will change my signature:

big-bang created the Text-Based Games. I destroyed it.

Okay. I get your point but you're saying  people wanting to keep the fun is bad?! I know it's ("supposed" to be) a programming website, but where else would we put the RPGs? Soon they might say we can't RPG in the galleries because they galleries weren't made for them!

Reply, please?

We are not say that fun is bad, its just that this forum should be about scratch, and it is turning into an RPG/Spam game one.

Archmage, You have a good idea. Better than mine, actually. I was just throwing another option that I have seen on other sites.
