I think that your friends list should show whos online and who's not. It might already show this, and maybe i just haven't noticed. I just think that this would be useful if you, say, had a question for someone and needed an answer right away.

ya, we should have that because sometimes i go to the forums just to see if someone is online and it is kind of annoying.

One problem is that the current logout does not expire for a long time, so any "online" information could be woefully out of date.
The forum, on the other hand, expires much too quickly, so that the "show new posts since last visit" is often useless, thinking that any small interruption in reading the messages (like to help someone debug their program) means you don't want to see the rest.

Ya! great idea. I get so annoyed with having to go to a different plac to see who's online all the time.
