Re: Survey: please help us

Thanks everyone. We have narrowed down the problem of frequent session time out to Mac OS X with a specific version of Java.

Re: Survey: please help us

Well recently I have had to log in a couple of times. Same specifications as above -

relyt12101 wrote:

1. Windows XP (to get specific, I use Media Center Edition)
2. Firefox 2(.0.0.9)
3. I rarely log on. Most of the time I don't need to log on. I can't remember the last time I got logged off, without me doing it manually.

Glad to help!

But with the current version of Firefox (2.0.0.11)

JANUARY 24 EDIT: Yeah, now almost every time I go on the site I have to log on.

Re: Survey: please help us

First of all, I have a Windows XP, and frequently use Firefox. I seem to have no trouble at all with my logging in and out; Actually, when I log in once, I stay logged in forever until I select log out. I didn't even know that other Scratchers were having trouble with this, I find my situation very handy.

I use Mac OSX with safari and I usually have to log in every other day. I go to this website about every day because it is my home page. But sometimes i have to log in every 5 minutes or so.

Re: Survey: please help us

1) MacOS X "Tiger" 10.4.11
2) Firefox 3 beta2 ;] (and, if its what I'm in at the time, FF2, FF1.5, NN9(RIP), Camino, Flock, Shiira, Opera, Safari3, Bumper Car, iCab, OmniWeb....and yes, I'm that Lynx entry in your request log. Heh heh.) (And no, there isn't a point to trying to view this site in Lynx. Tee hee.)
3) Login required on what seems to be a per-task basis rather than time. If certain activities have occurred, gotta log in. If not, I stay logged in. Less lately than it was being a few weeks ago.

- - -

As a PHP developer myself, I'd be *very* interested in the diagnosis once you track it down. I'm quite curious as to how the Java install on a Mac would differ enough from others or be able to reach outside its sandbox in such a manner as to expire the session between the browser and the server... But if that is indeed the culprit, it would be very good to know about!

All that being said, I wouldn't sweat it from a user-experience standpoint. You guys have a jam-up platform that rocks in multiple strata of coolness. I don't mind logging into a good site like yours more than once a day, especially when its an AJAX login with no typing required. Whenever you work it out, that will be just that much more frosting on an already admirable cake.

Does it have an "e" icon with a golden circlet around it?
Can you open tabs instead of windows?
If so, it's IE7.

Re: Survey: please help us

Hey guys, as a matter of interest I counted up a tally of Mac, Linux, and Windows users as reported so far in this thread, as well as the browser being used. I used the data for an experiment in doing graphs in Scratch:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/TegansPoppy/93706

I counted instances of use rather than just users. (Some people use more than one OS and/or browser; each got a tally mark). This is just a line graph, but I'm thinking through a pie chart and some others... *That's* probably a post for another thread, but I thought the stats from this thread would be of interest to some of you reading. *I* would be interested in the stats from the Scratch server logs; any ScratchRs want to share percentages of user agents and OS versions from the logs or Google Analytics? ;]

Re: Survey: please help us

Andres,

Here's a scenario in which I was logged out:
1) Visited project page for another user
2) Typed in a comment to them, clicked submit
3) Textarea emptied, no comment left. Session had been destroyed.
4) Clicked on My Stuff link (set to my stuff per initial load), took me there.
5) Clicked on My Stuff link again (set to login page now)

Something about attempting to leave a comment seems to be shorting out that session. Hope this is helpful!

Re: Survey: please help us

I use
1: Windows XP
2: Firefox 2.0.0.12
3: I cannot log on. Period.

The only reason I can post here is because I am using

1: Windows XP
2: Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254    smile
3: Every time I close the browser, it logs me out. (It might happen more offen, but I usually just use Firefox to browse on Scratch.)

Google is not a browser, but a web site.  Browsers are programs like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Browse, Konqueror, and so forth that give you access to web sites.

Re: Survey: please help us

I use Safari on a Mac. And when I turn on Rosetta, it doesn't log off for a long time, but when I turn it off, it logs off every minute or so. The problem is, when I open using Rosetta, I can't view the projects. All it shows is a coffee cup with 2 arrows around it. Can you try to do something about this? Thanks.
