It seems the bug happens most often in the paint editor!

Yeah, this has happened to me a lot, and I was so scared at first when it happened! But now, I know what it is. For me, it happens when I put pictures to close to the words in a sprite/background's costume.

If you think you are safe from this bug with 2 gigs of ram, you're not. I was working on my newest game, tower defense, and I got the disappearing text glitch. Shortly afterward i got the not enough memory dialog box and on the computer i was using has 3 gigs of ram!
My game isn't even very complicated and that was the only program running.
Link for Tower Defense:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/ParanoidPlumber/709012
that is pretty much what happened to me and i would like to say that in my experience it happens when certain script pieces are duplicated in excess and/or scripts are wrote and left without a strater piece for example
<move( 10 )steps>
<next costume>
<say[ see i told you so ]>
this should be
<when green flag clicked>
<move( 10 )steps>
<next costume>
<say[ see i told you so ]>

Yes, I think it does. It always happens for me in the paint editor.

Ya, that makes me angry! I did SO well on the project the other day and all the text in the project and on the top dissapeer! Dont other scratchers hate that?

I think it is browser incompatibility problem, what briowser you using.
Change to firefox.

There's nothing to do with browsers because the bug is occurring in Scratch, not browsers.

On my 24bit Scratch I got "half a text-bug". I don't know why, but only some of the text I was mainly changing the properties of dissappeard. Nothing else. What variation of the dissappearing text bug is that?
Offline
I just got it for the first time while working on a school project.
Here's an idea: Is Scratch only allowed a certain amount of memory? That would explain why it happens regardless of how much RAM the entire computer has...
I also noticed that the blue bar at the top of the window that is standard for Windows (the one with the X in the top-right) disappeared, and the first icon hovered over in the set language, save, and share section dropped down a bit. The weird thing was that the old position remained in sight, but only the bottom was usable. This was reset by saving, I think...the data sizes of the text-only costumes plummeted from amounts ranging from 13-25 KB each to below 1 KB. It's clearly a RAM problem.
I'm using Windows XP.

Well, my idea seems right, but looks like someone beat me to it.

is that going to be fixed in 2.0? I've never had that happen to me yet.......
Hopefully.

I found a similar glitch where the costume names and sprite names disappear, not the costumes and texts itself. You do the same thing: save and exit, open, it's there again.
Here's what happend to me:
I was working on a project. I edited a costume, then, when I exited out of the Paint Editor, all of my costumes' and texts' names disappeared. I couldn't click any of the boxes to edit the names of the costumes and texts! I was scared of losing all data and rushed to save the project. Then I exited the project and opened it again. All of the costumes' and texts' names appeared again! It was scary. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

That glitch is really annoying but next time it happens, I'll remember your advice Shadowsonics!

Well you see when I am editing my backgrounds and I use a circle then text. Then I decide that I want to move the circle. So I do but once I move the circle my text disappears. I thought ok fine I will just retype it but the text will not show up but I can still move the little black box that is the start of the text. Then after a minimal amount of time the program freezes up. Any ideas?

thanks, but for this project... it might be a little late so, i have a text question: i have a project on imnotbobtest, my test account. can somebody check out my simpsons project and see if there is ANY text? there r two different things... some text on the title screen, and when you press space homer simpson shows up and there should be text there. this is NOT SPAM thanks
well, now i see it, so im rly confused... ill say if it goes away again

Since Scratch 1.3, there has been a bug in Scratch that makes all text in Scratch suddenly dissappear - most of you know it as the dissappearing text bug.
Some think you lose all of your work when this glitch hits you, but there are some ways to get your project back
• When you see the first text dissapear, save it and close Scratch as soon as possile
Only when you made almost no changes, you should quit Scratch without saving.
• Now open your project again. You should see that all text in the Scratch GUI is there, but your texts in your costumes and backgrounds are still gone... If none of your backgrounds/costumes had text in it, you're done If not, continue...
• Open all of your costumes/backgrounds with text on it one by one in the paint editor by clicking the "edit" button next to the thumbnail. Then click ok without making any changes. All text should slowly reappear...
• Save (!) You don't want it to happen again...
Most of you know this already but some don't so I thought it would be useful to put this in a topic.
Be careful when you had this glitch with a certain project already. Probably something in the text is causing it and the chance of losing all of your work again is huge. So, you know, > http://www.mwstewart.co.uk/images/article/save_icon.gif <
As an alternative:filo5 wrote:
There is a method already, but this one is simpler:
1. When Text Bug occurs, save your project and exit Scratch app.
2. Open Scratch again, and open your project. Text on sprites will be still invisible.
3. Don't do anything, just hit "Save" icon several (mostly 2) times to restore text.________________________
How can I avoid this bug?
The Scratch team has not been able to track down the dissappearing text bug, that's why it's in there for 3 versions already. If you find a way to reproduce it, please post your exact situation on this thread: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=245324Paddle2See wrote:
Another thing to know about this bug is that it seems to be related to memory usage. If you find that it happens to you a lot, consider shutting down other applications you may have running so that Scratch has more memory to work with. Maybe think about buying more RAM for your computer.
The lack of memory can be produced by both other applications and Scratch itself, so this bug is more likely to occur when working on bigger projects.
JSO
its simple, just save and shutdown ur comp.
