The instruments and notes are done by a MIDI synthesizer. On Macintoshes, this just works, but on Windows you have to set some arcane system setting to connect the software MIDI synthesizer to the loudspeakers. I hope some Windows user who has had to deal with this can help you out.

In Windows, if you have Media Player installed, it should also be automatic. Again make sure the sound isn't muted (click on the volume (speaker) icon at the bottom of the screen) and that the volume is OK.
If that doesn't work, click on Start and then double click on "Control Panel" to open that window. Double click on "Sound and Audio Devices," click on the Audio tab and see what MIDI playback device is selected. The most general is the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" which should be available if Media Player is installed. If you have other options try them all and see what you like best. If there are no options listed, you will need to download Media Player from the Microsoft site or download some other MIDI playback device.
(Arcane? What could be more reasonable than clicking on "Start" to turn your computer off. )
