How can you make a game against the computer using variables and lists

How can you make a game against the computer using variables and lists, like chess? I've been trying to make a "you against computer" game of chess for like five hours. Any suggestions?

People with university degrees can't make "perfect" chessbots yet. If I were you, I'd stick to the much simpler game of checkers.
