Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I think using Scratch on portable devices would be good as you could develop your programs all the time and you could show people easier. Maybe even send the programs via E-mail or Text message to your friends. However, scratch would probably take up a lot of memory on a phone or iPod etc. so there may be a few problems there.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Would you like me to try to make a design for the app? It would give a bigger picture of what this is all about.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

We can use the whole scratch 2.0 concept. We can create and play scratch projects in the one app. The app could be just like the 2.0 site. I say we wait for 2.0 instead of making a 1.4-based app too early, cause no-one will want it, because 2.0 is out!

It does not have to be an iso. It can be a swf! As long as it's Flash 6 or less, it will run there. On the Wii, I think it's Flash 7.

I have a PSP and the internet browser memory isn't large enough to play a large swf game (it can play small ones)

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I have a solution: Go Everywhere! It is an online application made with JavaScript so that any mobile device with an Internet browser can have Scratch. Its going to be like Scratch 2.0 before it actually gets out.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

it would be cool if they can make a scratch console/unit. like netendo's and other gameing systems they should make a programable microcontroler specificly meant for scratch. it would have all the standard ports(mouse usb or not, keyboard usb or not, monitor/tv, usb/io programing interface, headphones and mic ports, as well as extra usb ports for other usb scratch products)

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Actually, you can run Scratch on an iPhone or iPod Touch (Or iPad). You use the experimental viewer.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

This post is mainly about Scratch on Nintedo DS/DSi

For the DS, how about a game with Scratch on it? Maybe it could be an earlier version, so some of a project can be done on a DS. the projects could be saved onto an SD card on a DS, then put onto a computer, or uploaded online using the internet connection. DS has a microphone and DSi has a microphone and a camera.  big_smile  The only thing I can't think about is what the top screen would be used for.  sad

On the devices we want scratch on, they would only be able to use camera and sound record if the device has a camera and mic., but not many people need the camera.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Also, a scratch for nintendo wii. That would be awesome. Since nintendo has a large memory count, it would work very well. i'm typing on a wii right now, lol.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

iPhone's don't support Squeak, Java, or Flash (as Crischb pointed out). However, Scratch for an Android is entirely possible (like I said before). But if the iPhone doesn't support Scratch, the ST can make Scratch support the iPhone ( tongue ). Take YouTube Mobile (m.youtube.com) for an example. iPhone won't support YouTube's FLV (which requires Flash) video format, but YouTube has some sort of "mobile plugin" of themselves that isn't Flash...

EDIT: Something like that happened before (Scratch supporting the iPhone, not iPhone supporting Scratch) There was an  app (in 2009) called the "Scratch player" (or something similar) that costed $3 (? I might be inaccurate on some of the things mentioned here). However, the app was removed by Apple because it was made by a third-party and wasn't affiliated with the Scratch team (?) and (possibly) because this was an app to "cheat" (well, more like "hack") in order to bypass the iPhone not being able to support Java (the Flash player didn't exist back then). But I'm pretty sure it's possible to make another app right now (except made by the ST, not fan-made). What do you think, andresmh/Lightnin/other Scratch Team Members?

............................
If you want Scratch (technically Kitcat, but it's almost the same, right??) then go to http://kitcatprogramming.net78.net/downloads.php. It's free (for the game part) but you need an r4 card.

We should focus on getting projects to work on iOS systems like the iPad or the iPod, online.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Scratch on mobile devices would be great! I think it shouldn't be just for the iphone. There have to be apps for all platforms. It has to be a player(only preview), although with Scratch 2.0 and a flash browser you could play projects. Whatever it is, i want it!

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I have an idea! how about, on the DS the bottom screen is for scripts, and the top screen is for the project. When you press the green flag, it will slide down to the touch screen and the scripts go up!  smile

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

iPads and similar tablets would be perfect for scratch, but I think it definitely would be incredibly difficult on anything smaller (I.e. a phone). Then again more people have smaller devices. That would be a con, but I can't imagine full-featured Scratch on a phone or iPod screen. It's just too small.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

some online games do work, because they're written in html5.
we could make something like the experimental viewer, but in html5.
then you could also save the page offline with a special app...

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I know how you get it on iPad/iPhone. Jailbreak and get Cydia. Then add a new source and add it as the link to the scratch download. Then click application on the source and voila! You're on scratch! This works for me but you can only make games, not download them, however, to play the games online, install puffin flash browser for 69p and go on scratch's website. Then go on a project. If it then doesn't work it might say on the side switch to flash. Then it will work!

Hope this helps!
