ITopic: Making Big Projects Load (Expanding Java Heap Memory)

My old hosting site deleted my site, I recreated the images. Old ones were XP, these are 7.

Just like Paddle2See's topic, only this is much more simpler and easier to understand.

Check out this cool project nerddownthestreet made: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/nerddow … eet/567275. It has both Windows and Mac instructions.  wink

Let's say a project won't show even though the blue Loading... bar is full. The Java Heap Memory needs to be increased.

1. Go to the Control Panel (you should know how to do this)
2. Find the Java icon and open it. Vista & 7 users, you might need to just search for it.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11485779/Pictures/IncreaseJavaHeapMemory/step1.png

3. Click on the Java tab.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11485779/Pictures/IncreaseJavaHeapMemory/step2.png

4. Click "View" under Java Applet Runtime Settings.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11485779/Pictures/IncreaseJavaHeapMemory/step3.png

5. Under Java Runtime Parameters, type -Xmx128m
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11485779/Pictures/IncreaseJavaHeapMemory/step4.png

6. Click OK and restart your internet browser.

You can proabally go higher (like I put 512), but don't go overboard.

Now try loading a project that usually couldn't load and see if it does.  smile

Hey, nice!  Pictures really help out here!  I'm going to sticky this and maybe move it to the FAQ area.

For Mac Users, try looking on the Java Website

Let's say a project won't show even though the blue Loading... bar is full. The Java Heap Memory needs to be increased.

1. Go to the Control Panel (you should know how to do this)
2. Find the Java icon and double-click it.

Do not go that far.

Now try loading a project that usually couldn't load and see if it does.  smile

How do you do this on a
mac?

Woo, even better minecraft clone! | I feel that programming is better than animation, because you can interact with games but not animations.

The instructions at the top are for Windows users...should work for Vista.

Re: ITopic: Making Big Projects Load (Expanding Java Heap Memory)

Another thing that should be known, be sure to add the code whenever your Java Version updates. (I have to do that on mine)

@TheComedian
Here are the pics via Vista.

1. Go to the Control Panel (you should know how to do this)
2. Find the Java icon and double-click it.
http://i40.tinypic.com/10pd1n7.png

3. Click on the Java tab.
http://i41.tinypic.com/2z5lvts.png

4. Click View under Java Applet Runtime Settings.
http://i40.tinypic.com/28ixqar.png

5. Under Java Runtime Parameters, type -Xmx128m
http://i43.tinypic.com/2q1uq7s.png

6. Click OK and restart your internet browser.

All those steps are originally ihaveamac's.

Vista is the same idea as XP, that's why it's not too different.

Re: ITopic: Making Big Projects Load (Expanding Java Heap Memory)

I have a different type of problem. I created an almost perfect replica of the blackberry game brickbreaker, complete with fifteen powerups, ball angling, falling bricks, unlimited multiple level capacity and five types of bricks but if I create around twenty bricks the speed of the program starts to drop in speed until the bricks are destroyed and thus there scripts stop until you reach the next level and I don't really want to be limited to only twenty bricks, twenty five max, and I wanted to know if there was a way to somehow expand scratch's memory or get it to run normally somehow or maybe just doing the java thing and play online at a better speed if adjusting that makes speed better too.

Thanks in advance, I hope there is something I can do, the game is only 96 KB, has no graphics beyond a 1 KB fireball and absolutely no sound effects or music, I presume a computer with slightly more gigabytes could do fine but I wanted to be able to play myself.

No, you do the instructions he says. You don't go to the Java website, you just open up the Java control panel on your computer

Re: ITopic: Making Big Projects Load (Expanding Java Heap Memory)

What about Linux (Distros, linux is a kernel)? I have to say, that there is an experimental Scratch version for Linux, and Java is well supported by Linux. Or maybe the Mac Instructions work with Linux?

Re: ITopic: Making Big Projects Load (Expanding Java Heap Memory)

Wow! This is so easy to understand!  big_smile  I while ago a made a RPG which had taken me months to make, and I'd added all kinds of fancy effects to make it better, but then I couldn't load more than 10 MB! I was gutted. But now I can make projects as big as I want, without having to limit myself to what I add to my projects! Thanks so much ihaveamac!  smile

There is still a 10 MB limit on projects that are allowed on the website.  This java heap limit just lets you view larger projects online.

I agree with P2S. It doesn't change how much you can share. It only lets you view big projects on the site.
