What I am saying is that a chatroom is more of a disadvantage than a advantage.

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

I don't think that private messaging is the best idea either.... There could be arguments, or people might just come onto Scratch JUST for that.

I haven't looked at this topic in awhile, but I decided I would. Even though your just kidding, just because something is for "learning" doesn't mean it is not fun. Common misconception. Usually brought on by school.  smile  What I meant was, every time you look at someone else's project, you learn something knew about mathematics, art, physics, and Scratch in general. But you still have fun.  big_smile

Now for the happy side. The advantages to having a PM system:
(No order)
1. Sometimes people don't have e-mails. They used their parents' e-mail to sign up. They have no way of contacting anyone else on the scratch website other than posting publicly on the scratch website and forums which is fine unless they are creating a secret game with one other person then it could be bad to do it publicly.
2. Can't really think of anything else at the moment...

Well my energy is all used up so I gotta go

Your #1 is brilliant. When I think of the scratch PM system I think of that reason alone. Even though I see the bad sides, there are many good sides to the story.

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

Pming allows gossip and basicly turns scratch into a E-mail Base. Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail have been created for this. The mere thought of 3,4,5th graders & 53 yr olds (xD) doing secret stuff, sending mature content to eachother is horrific. Let's keep Scratch a fun, safe, and public community open for everyone under the age of 18. >>

I agree. Why can't we let this dissussion go? The system is fine as it is! I will admit, I love to chat on scratch. But I think that chatting on projects and forums is enough.

The main point of Scratch like it says is to "Imagine-Program-Create"and If we put a private messaging feature it will ruin the point of Scratch which is to have fun programing.People will only come to Scratch to chat and Scratch will turn into something like Aim.I know I don't want that But do you guys want that?

how about instead of having a pm, have an area on the users page where you can leave them a message. this message would not be private, but publicly acessable this would send a notification to the stated member allowing them to go straight to the messgae, giving scratch user's an easier way to communicate with each other. this would be helpfull for members who team up to make projects and talking to new members can often be as helpful as downloading thier projects.

this would solve both problems of having an easy to access comment area and the views on the messages being private

just a thought =p

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

In the "profile" link up at the top of the page there's a section about email; you can choose "show my email address," "don't show my address but let people send me email through the forum," and "don't let people send me mail."  (This isn't the exact wording; I'm doing it from memory.)  So what's up with that?  I don't see any actual way to email people from the forums, and this topic says there isn't, so what's with the Profile thing?

It appears to just be some defaults the PunBB system had set that the Scratch team didn't bother changing.

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

Here is a good answer: Private messaging will probley be made in the future but its not nessesary to enjoy the website although it would be quite useful.

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

I wish people would stop asking for PMs on Scratch. x__x Scratch is a programming language, not a social networking site. If you want to chat, there are plenty of other places out there.

Well, I did see through it... I've been wary since the ever-present spam as of late. It's very upsetting.
