Newest projects section removed from front page

We decided to remove the newest project section because a number of complains about inappropriate projects being in the front page.

As most of you know every time someone flags a project as inappropriate we get an email, we look at the project and decide whether or not it should be removed.  Also, if a project gets flagged for more than certain number of times it gets automatically removed.

This means that an inappropriate project can be on the front page until it reaches the maximum number of flags, or it is removed by an administrator or it's pushed into the secondary pages by other newer projects. This can take minutes or hours.

We really like having the newest projects on the front page because it gave everyone the opportunity to have a big audience. However, while we have a better system to control inappropriate content we are taking down this section from the page.

Apologies. It is sad that that a few bad projects can make our community lose some features but we are trying to balance different valid points.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

It's sad to see this feature go.  For a lot of kids this was the only exposure that their projects would get.  It's good to see that it is still possible to get the list of new projects by selecting "See More" in the surprise projects.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

I guess that means there isn't going to be any chance of my projects getting viewed, because they don't get much views anyway.  sad

You can still see the new projects by clicking on Projects on the top menu. I am sorry for removing this feature. It is really sad. Do you have any suggestions?

Make a better more obvious link saying go to newest projects

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

I agree with Yayalec.  While I understand that there are some reasonable causes for the removal of the front page newest projects section, I think that it might be a good idea to have a link at the top of the page that says newest projects.  Although it really shouldn't hurt exposure too much because you can still post you stuff in galleries and make forums announcing it to get it out there. : )

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

andresmh, Would it be too much to ask for the scratch community to come up with a  different new category (for example, most comments) to replace new projects section for the front page and vote on it. We could vote in the forum or we could make a project with the ideas and in the comments people vote for it.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

No!!! The newest projects section has been removed!!!  sad   I wil sure miss it. Many members rely on the newest projects section to get their projects viewed and loved. How else is somebody supposed to see a project that somebody else just created, unless you have them as a friend or you're in the same gallery as them. I think this might discourage some Scratch members because their projects would not be viewed and loved as much. People would think that if not many people watch their projects, what would be the point of creating them? I mean, I understand why you guys are doing this, but couldn't you guys just create a tab or something leading to the newest projects? It's really sad to see the newest project section just.......... disappear. (Sorry if I sound mean, but I just miss this section already.  sad  )

Hello Scratchers!  Please check out my "Invisible Children" project.  I created it to raise awareness about the children in Uganda, Africa.  The film "Invisible Children" is very moving, yet inspiring.  I hope that I can inform as many people as I can about The crisis in Uganda.  Thank you  smile   Here is the link http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/plumberry/135831

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

There is and always has been a link called "projects" at the top of every Scratch page (including this one) that will take to the newest projects.  So you can view new projects - and not just the first 3, either.

What would rock though, would be a nice clear link that takes you to "Projects Posted since last visit"  and it would be even better if that link, on the front page, in nice big letters, said "(Number) new projects have benn posted since your last visit, click here to visit them".

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

Yeah, that's true. But I think some people kinda get frustrated at having to click on projects, then find their project, click on their project, and wait for their project to load. After a while, it'll probably become frustrating.  mad  People might start to look like this face to the left of me!  sad

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

SInce the front page only gets the most recent 3, and sometimes several projects are uploaded in a shor space of time, this method is probably fairer, in fact.

Not sure what you mean, plumberry, about people getting frustatrated whilst trying to find their own projects - to do that, you just go to "My Projects..."

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

How about, if the project looks fishy, check it out, if it's innapropriate, delete it. hten your projects can get more noticed. Now I know you can just press projects, but people don't actually do that! They only check them out if the name sounds interesting, "hmm, looks cool, lets try it out." Another suggestion is that before the users upload thier project, the somputer asks them for a rating, that says what this game has that is innapropriate. If there is violence or nudity, the game should could go onto the internet, but not show on the newest projects section on the front page. It's really a pain creating links on everones projects to check out my projects, because then the makers just delete it!

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

another suggestion is to have four or five surprise projects section! sounds bizare but it will get projects to be more exposed.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

another one is, it could only take one flag for a project to be removed

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

I don't want to be nasty, but removing the newest projects feature has made the whole website a lot worse. Because the flag as innapropriate thing is there... How about this... The owner of the project doesn't know who flagged the project, so people don't need to scared of flagging the project.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

Why can't there just be a delay. When you upload the project it will go to the "projects" section but it wont get front page exposure for 24 hrs that gives it time for it to be flagged.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

Analyzing the statistics of the site after the newest project section was removed and considering the pros and cons people in the forums and members of the Scratch team, we have decided to bring back the newest projects to the front page. Thanks everyone or your input. In a few weeks, we will start working on better mechanisms to filter inappropriate content. In the meanwhile please help us monitor the site by flagging inappropriate content.

When you flag something as inappropriate the creator of the project does not know who has flagged their project, only the Scratch team reads your comments.

Re: Newest projects section removed from front page

I think you should replace the screen-caps of the most recent three projects with a nice big button that says:

"(Number) new projects have been posted since your last visit, click here to visit them."

Said button would then take you to the projects screen, but filtered to show only the new projects, with a link to "show all projects"
