Why is gender a requirement for signing up?

I am physically a male but I do not identify with either of the terms male or female, and I find it an invasion of privacy that the site requires me to choose between the two. There should be a third option, "Other", or better yet, remove it entirely. I just got here and I don't mean to get off on the wrong foot, but this is very tiring for me to have to deal with everywhere that I go.

It's just there for statistical purposes, we want to see the number of males and females who use the Scratch software and the Scratch website.

I think you can F12 change it though. I may check in a bit. (I did so with my DOB)

Chrome and firefox let you inspect element by right clicking and it lets you change stuff you normally couldn't change.

Re: Why is gender a requirement for signing up?

Even for statistics, it shouldn't be a requirement. If it's an option, people can still select it, and you can still collect data. However, if it's required that I choose one or the other, it feels like an invasion of privacy to me. Here is another idea: Instead of just having those two options, you could provide a third "Other" option, therefore people who don't feel uncomfortable going by male or female can be represented accurately. There are a lot of "genders", like intersexed, transgender, transsexed, and that's only naming a few, but something like Other that encompasses all of them for the time being is alright for now. That will actually contribute to the variety of the data you can gather from this. Please work on implementing one of these suggestions, statistics shouldn't come before making users not feel comfortable using the site. Thank you.

Whoa, calm down. It's just a gender selection. Only the Scratch Team sees it, so it's not that bad.

I don't see why you're telling me to calm down when I've not given any reason for anyone to think I was not calm. Secondly, it does not matter who can see it or not. The data is skewed and wrong if it does not represent the people who don't fit into the two "main" genders anyways, and I would be more comfortable without having to choose between them regardless if only the team can see my selection.

Remember that this website is mostly used for kids, and most of them have no idea what the words "intersexed", "transgender" and "transsexed" mean.

Which is why my suggestion is to only add "Other" (for now) which can cover all of them sufficiently for a website with users with such low ages.

One of the reasons why "other" wasn't originally included in the signup was because it was seen as confusing to younger users, which ends up skewing the data. With 2.0 we might add a third option which makes you add your own field (though were not sure if users will use it truthfully and just put in something silly in the field because they can).

@cheddargirl: What you could do is have the other gender only appear if the user is over a certain age, like you have done with the city and state inputs.

Gender never appears on your 'My Stuff' page, no matter what.

I have already mentioned how it doesn't matter that it doesn't appear anywhere else. It makes me uncomfortable, and even if you can't relate, you can at least respect my feelings about this. I would like them to implement this as soon as possible, but I understand if they will wait until Scratch 2.0 is released (as long as that is pretty soon).

Re: Why is gender a requirement for signing up?

I don't really feel this is that much of a priority to add it though. All you have to do is press a little button to choose either male or female, and then it's over. It's only for statistics, and nobody really looks at it, so it doesn't matter what you put in, even if it's a lie.

Anyways, you already have an account, so there's no need for you to use it now.

I think you might be a bit mistaken - the appearance of the City and State field are only applicable to your "My Stuff" page, not the signup page itself.

Re: Why is gender a requirement for signing up?

I understand what Detriment means. I think selecting a gender should at least be optional if you aren't going to add an "other" option. I didn't know which to choose when I was signing up either and it isn't like seeing "other" as an option for gender on a list is going to scar children for their lives or give them the homo or anything. Just maybe confuse them for a second and then they'll move on

I would rather be alone than pretend I feel alright

Re: Why is gender a requirement for signing up?

Why not just added an "other" with a text box (to elaborate if they feel the need) for selection process. Best of all worlds: you are respecting transgender people and collecting statistics for further development.
