Scratch -1.4
There are few limitations in renaming a costume or sound associated with a sprite.
- Unable to rename the costume(or sound) to a name like myscratch32 if there is no costume or sound with the name myscratch31. This limitation forced you to name the costume(or sound) in sequential order only.
-The naming sequence must be started with *1.(You cannot name your costume or sound
to mycostume100.

sprite names are rarely needed, unless of course you are using non large readout 1 sprite variables, if you really need it use an acronym or don't include numbers. Another solution (which I highly recommend not using) is to make sprites with the name you want up to the number you need, not recommended due to the fact it would generate unneeded lag and file size.

We can rename a costume or sound to a name like system32(example only) by first creating costumes of name system1, system2 an so on till system32 and then deleting all the costumes except with the name system32. If we follow this trick,we can name a costume or sound to any non-sequential integer name without any problem of file size etc.
