That's godawful RAM. Get the cheapest 8GB DDR3-1866.

i operate on 4gb and for things that arent video games it works quite nicely

The main point I'm trying to drive home is that s/he can get twice as much RAM that is twice as fast and a newer model more cheaply then what s/he is currently getting.

you could have said that

i see no evidence of this; can you link to an example?

Re: PC Part Picker

I don't understand. Why the old parts? You can get newer components that will perform better for the same price instead of getting an ancient cpu, last-gen ram and a low-quality motherboard. (Seriously, please don't buy biostar.)  hmm

Another Update: I switched from a Gigabyte mobo to an Asus one because it has a newer chipset, and Asus's BIOS is just plain awesome.

Yeah, if you can get it at that price then go for it. Make sure it's compatible with your current power supply set up though.

I chose 12 gigs of RAM so I can run a Mac VM with 4 gigs.

EDIT: And of course I would get a Haswell processor when they come out.

Okay two things:

1. Your mobo doesn't support SLI, so if you ever wanted to add another GT 640 to bolster the performance, you couldn't.

2. Haswell? YES.

Re: PC Part Picker

Can't upgrade because the Haswell will have a different socket so you'll have to get an all new MOBO.

Re: PC Part Picker

Also know that Intel is going to be limiting the ability to use socketed chips to an every-other generation release. I don't think it will be a big deal as long as they still put up options. I'd accept a slower update cycle with the trade that it will allow for more compact and efficient mobile installations.

Re: PC Part Picker

Interesting website, I ended up building the PC I am currently using and I am positive I have not payed over 2 grand for it. Though, to be fair, I normally wait for large sales at semi-local computers stores and get decent parts for half price through.

Unless you need to play Crysis 3, with Farcry 3 and HD video encoding in the background, you don't need a system like this. And if you don't know what HD video encoding is, you definitely don't need it.  tongue

big_smile  My project is going a bit crazy. Originally I wanted to just get a better moniter. Then I realised my horrible graphics wouldn't let me get a 1980x1080 screen so I would have to a better GPU. Then I realised I'd need a better power supply. Then I realised that my case is MicroATX and there are no good MicroATX power supplies. Not sure what I'll do in the end.

looks like we have a winner![/derailment]

Anyway, I checked out the website. Seems pretty cool, but we're already building a computer. And if we built one more then there's 4 computers

seems a little... overboard

Re: PC Part Picker

Oh, this thread's still alive? Ok, have my actual (not overboard dream) setup.

A few notes:

- A case isn't listed, because I am using an old Cyberpower one from a computer from 2005 or so.
-Sound card is HT-Omega Striker 7.1, not Claro II
-Monitor is a 32" Toshiba TV >: D
-Mouse and keyboard are cheap garbage (originally bought for my Raspberry Pi), but will be replaced whenever I get a chance.

Yeah you're right, I can't find a MAtx 'supply that isn't from a terrible brand.
I'll keep digging for one though
