I recently did a theatrical production on puns. Really, it was just a play on words.

WIkipedia's article says that the joke is a form of anti-humor - in other words, it's not meant to be funny. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_did_th … he_road%3F.

"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
You disgust me, that chicken has nothing to do with you, his motives are none of his concern. If something makes you think he is acting suspiciously or with malicious intent, I advice you to get in contact with the police or similar. But as far as I can tell, there is nothing strange about how that chicken is acting. And since you specify that the chicken crossed the road, it implies you think there is something wrong with that or out of the ordinary, but seeing as there are more chickens on this planet than humans, there seems nothing unlikely with the chicken choosing it's path across a manmade strip of land made for easy and reliable transport. Perhaps you believe that, since humans made the road, the chicken shouldn't be allowed to use it? Whatever your reasoning, you haven't specified any particular chicken, out of the billions in the world, so I have no way of finding the answer. Even if I did track down the correct chicken I would have no way of communicating with the chicken so my journey to find said chicken would have been pointless. Of course, the reason would be that the chicken's brain naturally told it the best option available would be to walk across that road, but why the chicken's brain told the chicken that? I cannot help you there, and I advice you to stop questioning the motives of a likely innocent chicken.
