i haven't researched it, but I thought it's because the sky reflects onto the sea.

That's what most people assume, but it is actually blue (at least, according to my QI book of General Ignorance), just really really really slightly.

How slightly?

Considering water looks colourless to us, I assume it's too slight for us to see.

Why would water be blue? Why not green? Why not red? The sky is blue because of the sun reflecting through the atmosphere, which reflects on the sea, and makes it blue.

Wikipedia wrote:

The blue hue of water is an intrinsic property and is caused by selective absorption and scattering of white light.

The blue in the sky has nothing to do with it. It's what the water absorbs and scatters, which doesn't make it any less truly blue.

Actually, it's blue for the same reason the sky is blue, not BECAUSE the sky is blue.  The WHITE light scatters through the water ever so slightly, making it blue.  If you were in a room with a huge indoor pool (unchlorinated) and only CFLs, the pool would be blue.

So....water isn't really blue, it's the light in the water, water is clear.

Woop, sorry Septimus

Bill Watterson was the first comic writer to put the word 'boogers' in a comic strip. He put it in Calvin and Hobbes.
