How about Nightmare Before Christmas?

nightmare before christmas has a creepy look but overall it isnt really that dark except maybe the moments with oogie boogie

It certainly freaked me out when I was younger but at the same time gave me some sense of intrigue, not a lot of movies can do that for me.

like i said, the imagery can be a bit startling

One part I remember terrifying me was the clown with the tearaway face, I don't know why, it just scared me for some reason. The atmosphere of the film was at some parts foreboding, but at many other parts cheerful (like in Christmastown).

Anyways I rewatched Spirited Away from this old DVD I found. I can't call it "dark", it's mainly just very surreal.

I thought Coraline was a little dark.... but it is one of my favorite movies. I think a few of the Disney films could be perceived as dark as well. Maybe Aladdin, not really, but a little bit due to the fact that Jasmine and her father become slaves, some guy gets eaten, and the fact that Aladdin was close to being killed for his crimes. Not that dark, but a bit dark by Disney standards.
Pocahontas was a little dark and so was Mulan, but not really, only by Disney standards. Lots of older cartoons are darker... now most cartoons are all light and fluffy.... Oh, and Brave was a teeny bit dark as well.

Of the things you listed I can only agree with Coraline.
Nonetheless, Coraline is an amazing film, while frightening enough, it's still pretty darn awesome, I saw it in the theater, my life was never the same.

I was never scared by Coraline, but the end was kind of scary.

But in all seriousness, Coraline. Amazingly epic.

How about Nightmare Before Christmas?

I've never heard of that one

k i watched the dark crystal

it wasn't scary, but it was a little creepy. i'm not going to say it had a very dark story line, but a few of the creatures were a little disturbing, as well as the movements of all of the characters

Re: Dark Animated Films

How 'bout that one adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" made by a Soviet director in the early 80's or something? You thought the Disney version had dark overtones, check this one out. Makes old Disney movies look like a Friendship is Magic episode.

You should still watch it though, it's a fantastic film.
If you could handle Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, Corpse Bride shouldn't be a problem for you.

Well, when I get a chance - I'll try and get it. The problem is, my family never buys Tim Burton films - so the only chance I get to watch them is usually when my aunt comes over (she has LOTS of films). But we have Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (old and new) so that may be an exception.

On topic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is quite dark (mainly the film adaptations, but the book had it's moments).

Well I haven't seen any dark animated films myself, but I have to agree with Coraline according to previews.

Coraline isn't that bad until about two-thirds in, I mean SCARY-GIANT-SPIDER WOMAN.

I have started watching Youtube videos of Disney films, and I have to say, after listening and watching the Bells of Notre Dame I was like, wow, this is pretty dark.

Re: Dark Animated Films

I'm watching Felidae right now.

Seven minutes in and there's already swearing going on.

EDIT: ...And the film gets worse. MUCH, MUCH WORSE.
