They can feel, well, unique in some way or another, like they're their own person, they feel like they're rebels, they won't succumb to the mainstream.

I'm unsure whether this is true, but from people I know this is their exact view on it.

Do you just do your own thing regardless of it's hipster or mainstream status
or do you adhere to doing noting mainstream, and blend into the tons of others doing the same to the point where the counter-culture is just as much the exact same brainless person as the "mainstream"
