Re: Electronica

So I know Owl City doesn't really qualify as these anymore, have you ever heard his old stuff? Like the albums/eps, 'of June' or 'Maybe I'm Dreaming'?

Well, I haven't really checked all the genres listed under Electronica, but I guess Owl City would be trip-hop or indie dance.

But yeah, I do like some of Owl City's work.

Owl City is synthpop.
Indie dance would be more like the Go! Team, I think, and trip-hop is like Portishead, Massive Attack, &c.

Ok. Soundcloud says its hardcore though.

Wikipedia > Soundcloud on reliability considering people can label things whatever they want whereas Wikipedia at least has standards
Plus when I hear "hardcore" in relation to music, I think of hardcore.

No-one said anything about Skrillex just doing dubstep.

I like some electronic music, but despise others.
Some electronic(ish) projects or groups I like are Burial, Four Tet, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Ananamanaguchi, Venetian Snares, Nine Inch Nails, and Portishead.

I like alot of Aphex Twin's stuff - it inspired my first EP (Experimentalizmthingymabob).

A good example of Indie Dance could also be Glow or Ghosts in the Machine by The M Machine - and both recreate a warm 80s feeling.

I'm quite fond of the Come to Daddy EP and Richard D. James Album, and I also have drukqs, Classics, and, under the AFX pseudonym, an odd record called smojphace EP that's mostly just noise.

A good example of Indie Dance could also be Glow or Ghosts in the Machine by The M Machine - and both recreate a warm 80s feeling.

Neither sound like what my understanding of indie (or alternative) dance is, which I would consider to be more like LCD Soundsystem or maybe some Crystal Castles. Apparently '80s music like Depeche Mode and New Order fits into alternative dance as well, according to Allmusic.

Skillex's chill stuff is pretty good IMO. I wish he'd do more of that.

@veggie: My favorite Aphex Twin album would have to be Selected Ambient Works 85-92, if that counts.

Why wouldn't it count?
I do enjoy that one as well, but haven't heard it as much as I don't own it (yet  wink )

No reason, I guess because the title makes it sound like it's a compilation.  tongue
As for your listening problem, Spotify.

It does indeed, although it is not.
And I suppose I could, but I generally can't be that familiar with an album without, like, having it. It's not special!!!!!

I know that feeling. The albums that I really like, I want to buy but I feel like I'm wasting money if it's on Spotify anyway, but... I want to own it! D: Still, it's nice for listening to music from a wide variety of sources.

Supporting artists to have something I can hold in my hand doesn't feel like a waste to me. Plus, I've not always got internet, so Spotify ain't always convenient.

Yeah, I love Leaving EP except from Scary Bolly Dub which just sounded like he'd thrown all his songs in a blender and gave it a Bollywood theme.

Well, it would count as Alternative Dance, seeing as it has a 80s theme, unlike most music - possibly maybe synth-pop, but CHVRCHES or M83 would be better examples for synth-pop.

I'm not very good at describing electronic music, but Wikipedia lists their genres as "Electro house, techno, dubstep, drum and bass, progressive house".
