I for one, have a really slow internet. It takes a while for pages to load, and animated GIFs in people's signatures just make it worse. It's really annoying. So, I propose a ban on animated GIFs in posts and signatures.
Thoughts?

Profile - Display. Hides ALL images, however. Also, how can PHP(?) know whether a GIF is animated or not?
If you search on Google, there actually are ways to detect if a GIF is animated or not.

But then I need to manually ban each one.

Yes, but there are rules and guidelines as well.

Perhaps there could be an option to hide signatures with GIFs in them?

I would be down with that!

You could just adblock them or go to profile>display>hide images in user signatures.
People should be able to use whatever they want in their signature (as long as it is appropriate.)
But then I can't see others' lovely static images!

There's an app (extension) for that.

But that blocks all animated GIFs (plus you have to press something)!!!

I don't think they should be banned, but I do think there should be the option to block them.

If you have a problem with images in sigs, you can turn them off in your profile. That's good enough. If you really want, you could use your firewall to block all GIFs since they're such a problem with internet speed.

I agree so much!!!!!!!!!
I have AT&T DSL and I live in a rural area so I only get 50 kbps!!!!!!!! THATS PATHETIC
Please ban the GIFs because it takes about 10 seconds more to load per GIF on the page and it DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!

Actually that's a very good idea.
Some people like need their agifs though, so how about no gifs >5 frames? Then simple e.g. rotating banners will be allowed, but nothing huge.

You can't just do that. These forums are programmed in PHP (and the new ones are in Python), which doesn't have any image libraries sophisticated enough to find the number of frames in an animated gif. Writing their own would take weeks, which is time that can be spent on much more pressing things, such as writing 2.0.

I'd like to see that.
I think rather than a bedrock ban on all GIFs, there could be some option to turn them off.
Bedrock ban, you ask? Well, I just made that up.

Whatchu talkin' 'bout??
Here's some Python stuff, yo.
Plus writing your own wouldn't take that long considering you'd really just have to count the file headers.

My point is that they are very pressed for time right now and should spend it on more important stuff.
