Yeah, the topic explains my question, and by movie- making, I mean animating frame by frame, not exploring the model. And I don't want google sketchup. I can use that already, and that's not what I mean by movie making anyway ( it's a prime example of what I don't mean actually)
anyway, thanks in advance.
EDIT: if it has programming support, all the better, but it mustn't rely on programming.

SketchUp is a good piece of software for beginners
I'd recommend starting there

sorry, already got it. Good isn't it? I particularly like the follow me tool and how it can be used to create spheres.

Blender looks good, and I know a bit of python. I'll go with that until someone comes up with anything better.

Unity 3D is a game making program, but you can make movies in it too. They recently released a new version with vastly updated and excellent animation features, using motion capture data. And it's free!

Ill have a look at that too. Thanks. I wasn't really interested in game- making, but I know someone who would be. I need some 3d software mainly to help me write a book, don't ask how,I just sort of do.

Looks good. I have a hard choice.

Blender, definitely. It's a modeling tool, animation suite, rendering tool and scriptable game engine all in one.

+1
Blender has all of the capabilities of commercial 3D software such as 3Ds Studio Max and Maya, with the additional game engine. It's also free and open-source, meaning that you can freely browse the code and modify it. The only problem is, it's very "down to the metal".

I've got blender. Unfortonately, my laptop touchpad doesn't have a mouse wheel, which makes stuff harder. It also closes itself when I try to fill it or give it a texture. I'm running the latest zip archive 32 bit windows one and my laptop is about 3 million.
