The scratch simulator collaboration

Official scratch sim gallery http://scratch.mit.edu/galleries/view/32620

This idea was a spawn off of a geek joke on how to get popular in this forum thread
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=76053#p76053

I made a joke computer code on how to become popular in scratch and I started to think how I could actually use it in a program. Thats when I got the idea to make a scratch sim. Basically, its a game where you are a scratch user and you try to become as popular on the scratch website as possible within the allotted time frame. I figured that this would be a great group project so thats why I made this thread.

Sorry, I am no longer accepting people to join.

I don't really have high standards so I'll put your name on the list if you can make a simple platformer game like cube world. When you finish it, post your project here and if it is decent I'll add you to the list.

Re: The scratch simulator collaboration

Nice thread. I have a couple of good ideas like:
1. Maybe makeing it on a time based thing like you have _____ hours each day and you can do certain things for a certain number of hours. Kind of like That zombie shooter game on armor games.
2. The story/intro could be that there was a scratch popularity contest thingy going on and you decided to join.

I will think of more, I just got to go now.

I've already thought up a lot of the game mechanics in my head.

You have a few character stats

social skills- affects your ability to make friends, tell people about projects and find out project trends (you get bonuses if you make projects that follow trends). Also increases your chance of getting top viewed for a project which gives lots of bonus rank.

intellect- affects what projects you can make to start off with and is a factor in how long it takes you to learn things and improves the quality of your projects. Also increases your chance of getting top downloaded for a project which gives lots of bonus rank.

creativity- affects how "creative" your projects are and creative projects give more rank and give bonus boosts for art projects. Also increases your chance of getting featured for a project which gives lots of bonus rank.

The game starts when you are a new user. You see that they have a ranking list which lists the users with the top ten most loveits. You vow to get as high as possible on the list and you get to see your final rank when your interest level reaches 0.

The main play area is in a room. The main features of this room are your computer(which has more features inside it), your homework (do it or mum will get mad) which increases intellect, your sketchpad which increases your creativity, your im program on the computer will also boost your social skills. The options when you go on the computer are. Open help.txt (help for confused people), open scratch program, open firefox to go to the scratch site, and some minigames that boost stats.

When you open the scratch website you have a few more options. You can check out the ranks, check your messages (which is more like a pm thing), check out the top lists, learn programming techniques in the forums (and at the support page for low levels), your my stuff page will show your projects and show how many loveits (or rank) each project gives you and your total love it amount. When you submit a project it calculates the rank your project gets by using a formula that incorporates, trends and your stats. There is another formula that incorporates trends, stats and random numbers to see if you project gets frontpage for bonus love its.

This is just how I thought it would be like.

If you want you can make the starting screen and the game intro. I wanna see how many people want to join before I start anything big.

Wow Archmage, looks great! I'd be glad to join  big_smile

I can do what you would like me to  - I can do some programming but you're probably going to do the programming part yourselves, it makes things easier  lol

I am not that extremely bad at art so I could do some...

I am going to do most of the programming probably, just to make sure its efficient and works well. I can take parts that are programmed by other users, fix up the code and put it in. There are also the minigames that have to be coded.

Re: The scratch simulator collaboration

I can't program games too well, but I am good at menus, beginning/end titles or credits, or any of the stuff you don't want to do. I will make a design of something that you need if you want to see my skills.

Sorry, I don't mean to be mean but I don't think you have enough experience to help with this project. The menus in this game must interact with the code so I will be making it. I need good artists so if you can art then you can help.
