The "Steam Box"

So, some of you might've heard about Valve's Linux-based "living room PC". While nothing big has been announced yet by the company, it's certain that we'll be seeing this new console sometime soon.

I'm not a gamer at all, yet these are still good news to me. If this article is to be trusted, Newell explains that "[people] don’t realise how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behaviour", and I totally agree. The release of this console, not to mention their recent efforts to release Steam for Ubuntu, will push developers to ensure compatibility with Linux, improving the platform altogether, and getting people to migrate to a free platform that gives you total control over it, and isn't ridiculously bloated.  smile

tl;dr Steam box released => devs make games Linux-compatible => more people use Linux yayayay

So what do y'all think?  big_smile

Re: The "Steam Box"

Oh, this is Linux-based? That's something I didn't know. If it gains a foothold in the market, this could be very good for Linux gaming indeed. Consoles are so much more accessible for the average consumer, so this has a much better chance of getting developers to make games Linux-compatible than the relatively small population of Linux users does. I look forward to see how this turns out.

I like the idea a lot. This and Ouya will hopefully make the game market a lot more open.

Re: The "Steam Box"

This sounds great for most people.

But for people deep in the backwoods like me, the world's switch to digital distribution is a problem. My whole family has to stay under about 30GB/month, which means that very big downloads (like downloads off Steam) are generally a no-go....

But either way, this box would be a step in the right direction overall.  smile

Re: The "Steam Box"

^^I totally understand that - digital distribution is not much of an advantage if you have a slow, or transfer-limited Internet service. Hopefully the box supports some kind of physical data transfer medium, even if it's just USB drives or something along the lines of that  tongue

EDIT: Aaaand it's revealed! It has SATA ports - one should be able to connect a DVD drive to it.

Re: The "Steam Box"

A few weeks ago me and my bro were trying to think up names for it, and one of us said piston. :p

Good news for people like me!  big_smile

Though it doesn't really surprise me that it has SATA ports, it is based off normal PC hardware (very compact hardware, though).

O_O

Optical, USB 2/3, eSATA, HDMI, DisplayPort... they are doing this very right, and I love it.

Sure they are.  big_smile

It's pretty much a notebook with no screen. I'd get one if I had the opportunity, for sure - though it's meant for gaming, I'm sure it'd make one great, compact home PC.

Three Consoles for the U-Natics under the sky,
Seven for the XBots in their halls of stone,
Nine for Sony Defence Force doomed to die,
One for the PC Gamer on his virtual throne
In the Land of Keyboards where the Mice lie.
One Console to rule them all, One Console to find them,
One Console to bring them all and in the awesomeness bind them
In the Land of Keyboards where the Mice lie.
