Scratch Defence

"A defence game where you attack bugs that try to go into the computer... with Scratch cats!!!"

Game Design 7/10
This game was very fun and addictive! I played three times to try and beat my last score, and I thought that this was a great defence game. However, it loses some points because the level designs look a little bland, which also affects your graphics score. The menus were plain and having to wait for the Scratch Cat to walk across the screen using pre-made animations only dragged the game down. Another issue that dragged the game was the fact that you could not speed the game up. Some music and smoother animations may have increased the pace too, but we'll leave these for the other categories.

Originality 6/10
On Scratch, there have been a number of attempts to create a tower defence game, and this is a unique one. You have to stop viruses and bugs reaching the laptop. However, it loses some points because although this has a unique plot, the fact that you use cats to stop it causes the plot to make no sense. Also, there are no extras like temporary pop-up walls or a security scan that wipes out all enemies on screen (can only be used once per round, and is costly!)

Ease Of Use 2/5
Hand comfort is fine, as you only need to use the mouse. However, without any in-game information on what each tower does, it means that you have to access the project notes and quit your game. This is a real problem when you need to build towers quickly because you're about to die! Although this could have been a very easy game to play, it was made hard, and for that reason it scores below average.

Difficulty Balance 3/5
My issue with this is that the game starts very easy (good), but within a couple of rounds you are faced with camouflaged bugs, which require expensive towers! Surely the player needs to have been given more time before these pop up, (pardon the pun, pop-up) and without any extra features, there's less planning ahead on whether to build defences now or whether to save up for extras. This would have given hardcore gamers something to think about. Therefore, this deserves an average score.

Graphics 2/5
The maps look bland, the animations were mostly limited (although there were one or two cool ones) and the interface was an eye sore. If anything, start with aligning the buttons. Also, because you did not have information showing up about each tower, it meant that you had to rely on what the tower looks like to guess what it does, which was quite difficult. So, you need to give each one more character and smoother animation. There also appeared to be a lack of bullets, the bugs would pop randomly near a few of the towers (I'm not talking about the flashing fire one).

Sound 2/5
There were a rare number of sound effects and no music in the background. Prioritise the music, then add sound effects to the buttons (when you click them) and you'll score five!

Firing Round 6/10
Reliability 2/2
0 (Very Glitchy) 1 (A few glitches) 2 (Hardly any glitches)
Game Length 1/2
0 (Too Short) 1 (Descent Length) 2 (Long lasting or endless)
Game Pace 1/2
0 (Very slow or too long for it's own sake) 1 (Quite engrossing) 2 (Very well paced and fun)
Replay Value 1/2
0 (Would never replay/ did not want to finish it the first time) 1 (Might replay) 2 (Too good to stop!)
Programming 1/2
0 (Simple to make) 1 (Fairly advanced) 2 (It was very complex)

Message to the project creator: Do not be disheartened if you get 0 here, as even the simplest of games can score high in many other categories, especially ease of use and game design.

Overall Experience 35/50
This was an above average experience. Nevertheless, it could have been a lot better considering that it is a tower defence game. Some music, more comical animations and easer to use interfaces would have quickened the pace of the game, and as an extra, a way to speed up the game. Still, it can be praised for allowing the player to get straight into the action without any long-winded manual needed, although, it still made it hard to find the most suitable towers.

Re: The Gaming Standards: Offering the most detailed reviews.

JH OS 2 Pre-Alpha

"JH OS 2 is a remake of the not-that-popular JH OS. This one has 16 apps instead of 9."

Some alterations have been made to the scoring system.
OS Design 5/10
The design is average. Nothing special, and nothing particularly bad. The screens, on the most part, make clear what part of the OS you are on, however, there are some inconsistencies. For example, on the installer the background changed for every app! Shouldn't there only be one background for the installer? Also, it seems a bit random to have all of these apps on your operating system that have been downloaded but not installed. There's also a lack of organisation, with everything stuck on the desktop. Nevertheless, this point will not affect ease of use, which I'll explain later. Also, although I don't mind long loading times (for example, cities take about 4 minutes to save in my G:4000 game) when I know that they are fake loading times it makes me cringe. A fade-in/fade-out transition would have boosted the graphics score and boosted this score. Finally, at the start there should be the option to create a new account if none exist, then it should automatically log you in.

Originality 3/10
The only originality I could find in this was with the Pacman game, although I don't think that was intentional. I have never played a Pacman game like it. I thought that the maps were usually symmetrical, with lots of paths to get around. This version only has two ways to get through each line on screen, and there are no ghosts or power-ups! It looks like a random maze game, and not a Pacman game.

Like with most operating systems, this includes your usual calculator, paint program, music and background options, as well as an inappropriately long manual. I'll get back to this in Ease Of Use. The only original things I found in this was the timer (which isn't the most exciting new feature that'll get you on front page) and the impressive JH Programming! It's still a little basic. Maybe you could have the choice between what you want to program. So at the start, a menu would come up. If you choose animal, then you can choose between the dragon or another animal. These give you the current options. However, if you were to select another category, then you'd get lots of other functions instead.

Ease Of Use 4/5
It was easy to navigate, but when you start adding more apps (other than the current few) you may need a better way to organise everything. What if you add 20 apps? Or will you just have to limit yourself? The owners' manual is huge, and what's interesting is how you can read abut apps you haven't even installed yet! If there was a separate page for each app, and they could only be accessed once it has been installed and opened, it would be a lot more organised. As mentioned earlier, to make the JS programming a little easier, you could have included a clear list of functions, instead of having to flip through pages of text.

Difficulty Balance 4/5
The paint program, timer, and calculator do not count here. The button game was too boring and easy, although, I suppose it does entertain some people. Seen as there's no way to change this, this will not affect your score. However, what will count is the fact that Pacman is too easy. There's no challenge, and the fact that you die when you touch a line makes it even less like Pacman!

Graphics 2/5
The logo has white edges around it, which is surprising unless it wasn't made by you. The only thing I liked were the things not drawn by you, but they don't count! However, I'll give you 2 points for the nice icons on the interface! The buttons without icons still need attention, and although gradients do look nice, they look horrendous when used with two opposite colours. The backgrounds should be either made by you or taken with a camera by you, then in the credits I'll check to see if you made them or not.

The paint editor was very limited when it came to graphics because of the huge grid! When I saw the calculator, I was expecting the numbers to spin around, and for the sum to appear on the top of the screen as you entered information in. Sadly, this wasn't the case. In the end, I was presented with a messy variable that plopped itself on screen.

Sound 3/5
I can't seem to remember many sound effects (or any) and the music was very good. I score this based by giving a maximum of three points for music, and two for the effects. Well done, you scored maximum points on something!

Firing Round 6/10
Reliability 0/2
0 (Very Glitchy) 1 (A few glitches) 2 (Hardly any glitches)
Game Length 2/2
0 (Too Short) 1 (Descent Length) 2 (Long lasting or endless)
Game Pace 1/2

0 (Would never replay/ did not want to finish it the first time) 1 (Might replay) 2 (Too good to stop!)
Programming 2/2
0 (Simple to make) 1 (Fairly advanced) 2 (It was very complex)

Overall Experience 20/50
This was a below average experience, but not a terrible one. Fair enough this is at pre-alpha stage, but I'm not confident about how many alphas it's going to take before it reaches 1.0! Things to work on includes the graphics, sounds, glitches, authenticity (the Pacman game) and above all, how original it is. I don't know how many operating systems on this site have calculators, changeable backgrounds, music players, paint apps and one or two mini-games, but there's a lot!

Re: The Gaming Standards: Offering the most detailed reviews.

The Gauntlet 2

"You must travel through the Gauntlet, completing all 7 Levels in under 75 secs and without losing 500 points. "

Game Design 8/10
This game was fun and addictive, and the cartoon atmosphere sure helped keep this game fun, regardless of the off-putting title. Perhaps a slight adjustment to it would be appropriate, such as The Gauntlet Adventures. I never expected it to be what it turned out to be before I started playing. There were some pretty cool enemies in here, however, the fact that the square picked random locations meant that you would win if you were lucky and would lose if you were unlucky, rather than relying on skill. This would be frustrating to any player who knows the courses back to front but are cursed by a square who happens to keep hitting them.

Originality 4/10
This is another maze game where you have to get past the enemies alive and to the exit before the timer runs out. Sadly, there's nothing much original going on here. Maybe there could be different modes. Maybe if there were some traps, or keys to be found to open the exit, or maybe some more unique enemies (like those robots who shot out those lasers!) then this would score much higher. You still get some because of the robots and because of the linear level designs, which I haven't seen often. Oh, and for the evil cat too.

Ease Of Use 4/5
It's easy to use! If it wasn't for those squares that are hard to avoid, this would have gained full marks.

Difficulty Balance 3/5
There could have been multiple difficulty options easily implemented. Also,as with a few other categories, those pesky squares bring this score down! Therefore, this gets an average mark.

Graphics 3/5
The animations were cool, especially on the robots, and the drawn graphics were average, hence the middle mark. However, you did use some pre-made graphics and there weren't that many animations. Also, I felt that it was too dark. The game should have been much lighter and more exciting!

Sound 1/5
There were no sound effects, and you used music from the Scratch resources! Only one mark for at least putting some in.

Firing Round 5/10
Reliability 2/2
0 (Very Glitchy) 1 (A few glitches) 2 (Hardly any glitches)
Game Length 0/2
0 (Too Short) 1 (Descent Length) 2 (Long lasting or endless)
Game Pace 1/2

Replay Value 1/2
0 (Would never replay/ did not want to finish it the first time) 1 (Might replay) 2 (Too good to stop!)
Programming 1/2
0 (Simple to make) 1 (Fairly advanced) 2 (It was very complex)

Overall Experience 25/50
This was an average experience, and there's tonnes of room for improvement! Mainly in the graphics, sound and game-play. I'd recommend this game if the experience was more memorable.

Re: The Gaming Standards: Offering the most detailed reviews.

Rainbow Chicken 2

"You must explore the city to spread the truth about [an evil group]. The problem is they've contacted the army to destroy you with explosive rocks."

Game Design 9/10
The idea is cool, where you must destroy rocks whilst avoiding them. However, I felt that you took the wrong angle at this. This could have been an RPG, with rock-dodging as one of the missions. I felt that on it's own, the game became repetitive and uninteresting. Still, it kept me hooked for long enough to deserve a nine! It would have got a ten if it was faster paced. Some of the rocks could have started half-way down at the beginning.

Originality 10/10
You've taken the classic obstacle-dodging game and made it into something unique. This has a funny plot, a comical style and cartoony feel as well as a memorable character. Just a shame that this chicken wasn't involved in an RPG, otherwise we could have found out more about it.

Ease Of Use 3/5
Although this was easy to use, because of the weird jumping physics (what on earth seriously jumps in a triangular form like that?) it's hard to work out when to jump to get to another building. Also, because the instructions were not in the game itself, you can't get full marks, as I was confused at first. I also felt that a clearer and prettier interface would have been good, instead of a line of variables.

Difficulty Balance 2/5
This game lacked a difficulty option, which could have sped the game up for less patient players like myself. The rocks came down so slowly, and there was so much space to move into to avoid them that this game was too easy. Without the challenge element, it lost a lot of interest.

Graphics 4/5
Some great graphics and smooth animations, although the chicken's physics could have been improved, it would look less weird if it could only get on roofs and not half-way up buildings, and the interface at the top needs improving. These only lose you one mark because the rest looks so good and these are not too significant.

Sound 1/5
As usual, I give out a maximum of three for music and two for sound effects. The ambiance scored you one point, but there didn't seem to be enough sound effects to get you the full two. I'd of rather if you had no ambiance, and replaced it with loads of sound effects to get you two points. Then, you could have had some cool, electronic music in the background. That would have got you the full marks if you selected the right song(s).

Firing Round 8/10

Message to the project creator: Do not be disheartened if you get 0 here, as even the simplest of games can score high in many other categories, especially ease of use and game design.

Overall Experience 40/50
This was a highly enjoyable experience, even if the pacing was a little slow to start with and the character was not used as it could have been. The idea could lead to many spin-off games, including an RPG. To sum up, the graphics need some tweaking and music is needed. You also need to work on the jumping physics and maybe make it more challenging.

TOTAL: 77/100

Key
0-19 I could have made that in my sleep!
20-39 Needs a lot of work.
40-59 An average project I suppose.
60-79 Quite a cool project.
80-94 Wow! It only needs a bit of tweaking.

When I said RPG, I meant it as in a complete spin-off. There should be a huge variety of missions accessed from a central hub, one of them being rock-hitting if you want to keep that. I just don't think that the current game-play can withhold its fun for any more sequels.

Re: The Gaming Standards: Offering the most detailed reviews.

Fallout - the Dying World

"In the year 3848, nuclear war broke out. Mini-bots were created to save the world from devastation. You are a bot, and you are our last hope."

Game Design 9/10
The game has an interesting, although somewhat disappointing story, which is about mini-bots being made to save a post-apocalyptic world. We're never told about what the robots do, and I don't see why you need so much training for solving mazes. I got excited after reading the story from the main menu, and finding out that I'd be exploring the dark and avoiding radioactive waste! I was then disappointed to hear that that'd be it. There's no missions like having to find materials to piece together new structures, or having to save a group of survivors by healing them before they die. (To make them appear near the light, use a <if distance to bot is < X, set ghost to 0> and for extra smoothness make them become more visible as you draw closer to them)

This game deserves a nine for its great plot, regardless of what my imagination predicted would happen during the game. Of course, it also deserves a nine for having a good pace, although, it may have been nice to fill in the spaces. There are a lot of large areas left blank, that could have been saved for enemies and the like.

Originality 7/10
The style is original, as well as the plot and the location. However, this is not the only maze game to use a torchlight affect to hide the remaining level. Also, as mentioned earlier, this could have been a lot more unique if the ideas were expanded on beyond finding the exit to mazes. For that reason, this only deserves a seven for originality.

Ease Of Use 4/5
This was easy to use, and it had an in-game tutorial! However, one time when I tried adjusting the speeds of the jet-pack it wouldn't let me change anything, so I had to restart the project for the sliders to work. Whether this should class as a glitch or as an accessibility issue I'm not sure of, however, it was difficult to see behind the sliders. Because of the blind spots, this loses a point. I don't even know why they're in the game in the first place, I never had to slow it down for precision or increase it. Maybe two simple, good-looking buttons at the top with "slow" and "fast" would be better. Perhaps a little flame could come from behind the bot during fast mode, but let's save that for Graphics.

Difficulty Balance 2/5
The game was too easy, and there were no moving objects or enemies or any time limits or anything to make it hard at all.

Graphics 4/5
Very cool graphics, I'd suggest adding borders to any boxes and buttons to make them look better, and that you make them zoom in when highlighted, to make them look better.

Sound 2/5
You can get a maximum of two points for the effects, and three for music. The music scored you two, and it would have been higher if it was more memorable. The loop was pretty flat and boring, I almost paid no attention to it. As for effects, there were none.

Firing Round 5/10
Reliability 2/2
0 (Very Glitchy) 1 (A few glitches) 2 (Hardly any glitches)
Game Length 0/2

Programming 1/2
0 (Simple to make) 1 (Fairly advanced) 2 (It was very complex)

Overall Experience 35/50
This was a good experience, and if there were missions, harder puzzles, more interesting music and an extra touch-up on graphics than this would have easily scored much higher!

Or I can just choose a few, if you'd prefer.

What do you think?!  big_smile  What is the point of having so many reviewed anyway, just stick to your most recent couple projects. Quite a few of them are a few months old, such as Fallout which I know has received at least one review already.

I say Fallout, List OS, and Negatives.

I've just done Fallout for you, but I know I've reviewed List OS because I remember telling you to add a homepage and to make the lines clear when you enter the homepage, so I'm not reviewing that twice. Also, I'll wait until tomorrow to do Negatives.

Interesting about the squares- there will be no squares in The Ultimate Gauntlet and i may adjust them in this project

I would not call it a maze game but i agree with what you are saying. The Guardians (or robots as you have called them) were definitely the best challenge in my opinion  smile  I am glad you liked Evil Scratch Cat!!

Ease Of Use 4/5
It's easy to use! If it wasn't for those squares that are hard to avoid, this would have gained full marks. Thank you very much  big_smile

Difficulty Balance 3/5
There could have been multiple difficulty options easily implemented. Also,as with a few other categories, those pesky squares bring this score down! Therefore, this gets an average mark. Interesting, in a future update i will probably add difficulty levels, in The Ultimate Gauntlet i am going to let you choose how many Points you want to play and each obstacle (depending on difficulty) has a different points level!

Graphics 3/5
The animations were cool, especially on the robots, and the drawn graphics were average, hence the middle mark. However, you did use some pre-made graphics and there weren't that many animations. Also, I felt that it was too dark. The game should have been much lighter and more exciting! 3 on graphics  yikes  I expected 1! Yeah graphics are not my strongpoint but the darkness will hopefully be solved in the sequel

Sound 1/5
There were no sound effects, and you used music from the Scratch resources! Only one mark for at least putting some in. What is wrong with Scratch Resources  tongue  Sound is my second weak point after Graphics but (hopefully) in The Ultimate Gauntlet i will create my own soundtrack which fits in with the game

Firing Round 5/10
Reliability 2/2

Programming 1/2
0 (Simple to make) 1 (Fairly advanced) 2 (It was very complex)

2/2 for reliability  big_smile , i have worked hard on ironing out problems- for example The Wrecking Ball on Level 1 decided to go off the path so it was easy to avoid so i have fixed that one! Too short? Very well, the sequel will have a lot more obstacles and hopefully higher paced. You might replay- that's good but i am working on improvements. For programming you can expect Lists in The Ultimate Gauntlet  smile

Overall Experience 25/50
This was an average experience, and there's tonnes of room for improvement! Mainly in the graphics, sound and game-play. I'd recommend this game if the experience was more memorable. Memorable? hmm... what ideas shall i come up with  smile
