oooooooh I get it now XD I thought you just meant in general. Yes it's not a fandom unless you get specific like saying your fandom is Pokemon, Madoka, Hetalia, etc, etc.

But anime and manga are specific types of TV and books.
And besides, it's easier just to say anime then name EVERY SINGLE ONE.

still a weaboo would be more of a fandom as that is kind of the definition of a person who loves anime but anime itself cant be a fandom

They're both pretty much the same thing except weeaboo is generally derogatory.

Re: What fandom are you?!?!

clarification:
weeaboo is someone who is obsessed with and glorifies japanese culture but is not japanese, including but not limited to manga and anime (so they also might try to talk in japanese and act japanese), this is an insult. you can like japanese culture without being a weeaboo if you don't act like a butt.

otaku is someone who is obsessed with something, usually manga or anime, they can be japanese. fun fact: in japan otaku are generally considered abnormal freaks and are possibly even less accepting than in america, depending on where you go. the mayor of tokyo has called loli-con otaku "sad people with warped dna" and got re-elected.

anime in america means animation specifically from japan (occasionally can apply to other east asian cartoons but not really). in japan it's just a word for animation, so even things like totally spies might be called anime.

manga means japanese comics and stuff, made by japanese people, that conform to a certain style. mangaka are people who create manga. you probably don't want to be one as much as you think you do. chinese and taiwanese manga are called "manhua" and korean manga is "manhwa" and they are much less common and have a slightly different art style.

j-drama or j-dorama are basically japanese dramas. they're live action. there's also lots of taiwanese, chinese, and korean drama.

j-pop/j-rock are pop and rock, respectively, that is produced and made by the japanese in japan. not as popular as k-pop, though.

Re: What fandom are you?!?!

btw:

fandoms are communities that surround popular culture like TV, certain bands, movies, books, and so on. you can like something without being in the fandom - it generally only refers to the people who actively participate in it (doing things like roleplaying, attending conventions, making fanwork like fanart and fanfiction, etc.).

Re: What fandom are you?!?!

Otaku is more of a non derogatory term, I'd think.
One of my classmates is Japanese and she loves anime, so she'd be classified as otaku...?

Anyways I don't see why people do not see Anime as a fandom, it has a large following, there are conventions, there are fan arts, fan fictions, fan whatever's.

Like I've said before, it all depense on your definition of a fandom.

Anyways I don't see why people do not see Anime as a fandom, it has a large following, there are conventions, there are fan arts, fan fictions, fan whatever's.

An otaku is pretty specifically someone who has no social life whatsoever outside of interacting on the Internet with other otaku. For instance, the first Urban Dictionary definition:

Otaku is the honorific word of Taku (home).

Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer).

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet.

Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etc

Sometimes it can vary (from "I like this anime a lot" to "knows more about whatever celebrity than they know about themselves" to "literal sociopath"). In the west it can be good or bad or just a classification but otaku is almost always an insult in Japan (look up "Tsutomu Miyazaki").

Also, anime is very broad and varied and no one loves every single one. And in the original sense of the word, it simply means "animation", including the Garfield movies and Sailor Moon and everything in between. Each anime has its own unique following.

Re: What fandom are you?!?!

claps for luiysia
no but from what ive seen on tumblr (and that has a lot of fandoms) fandoms are usually for more specific things
like theres the madoka fandom, sailor moon fandom, hetalia fandom, etc etc etc
i never really see a general anime or manga fandom. most people list specifics since you can make fanart or fanworks for a specific anime or manga but you can't really make fanworks for anime or manga in general.

fandoms are groups that support and share common interests of something through participation of cosplay or cons or whatever and fanworks of stuff and i can't really see how you can do that with the general term of anime or manga??? i don't know the definition and classification of fandom has become really warped lately it's hard to tell anymore
