For some reason, with the last few versions of scratch the play note and play drum block haven't worked in scratch. They are fine on the website, but they don't do anything in scratch, even when the volume is at 100%. Does anyone know what's wrong?

ya this happened to me. Even my old projects from other versions don't have sound with those blocks. Mabey I left mute on but the Play _____ block still works.

Double click ther sound icon in the system tray (the list of small icons in the lower left corner when using windows) and turn on the SW-Synth volume to the max.

Doe that helped?

notes and sounds have different mutes (wav/midi). If you have mute on midi, the notes won't play.

I have a similar problem. I am using Ubuntu, running the newest form of Scratch using Wine, and when i use a play instrument or play drum button, it does nothing, and in my old version of scratch, when I did the same thing, the entire script is highlighted in red.
Can anyone help?

Thanks to everyone that helped. What actually happened was that my mom got a new mac where the play note block works ^_^
