I know you don't, and I don't have a problem with it, but it just seems a bit weird to me.
To me, it's similar to classical music in the way that the pieces are done (and the fact that they're pieces rather than songs) and seem almost like a progression from prog rock (which I know you listen to). Also, I'd consider GY!BE and Sigur Rós to be on separate sides of the post-rock spectrum. Post-rock isn't even really fair as a term because the music within it is so diverse.

I can understand Nevermind or In Utero, but Bleach is clearly the lesser of the three. That's like saying Godfather Part III's better than the first two.
I can understand not liking GY!BE, because while I love them, I can see that they could be a bit too long and overblown for some tastes. However, I can't even being to fathom disliking Sigur Ros (although that could be biased since they're my prefered group).
BTW, I chose Downward over Fragile because I prefer the concept and I love the music. It really is one of my favorite albums of all time. Fragile's excellent, but overstays its welcome slightly (as many double albums do). We've already argued to the death about my choice of Blue Album over Pinkerton so it's really useless at this point.
Oh, and what did you think of Allelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend?

I didn't mean for it to be a personal attack, so sorry if you felt like I was insulting you or anything like that.
I loved it too (sorry for the typo). It's my 2nd favorite album of the year (beaten by Sigur Ros ).

@NIN
I prefer The Fragile more because it's less aggressive, more complex musically and lyrically (with some of the musical motifs keeping the entire thing cohesive), and just generally has better songs IMO. It's got a huge variety of musical styles (compare "Star... Inc." vs. "The Frail"), a wonderful atmosphere, and flows better. Individual standouts I like to listen to separately as well include "The Day the World Went Away", "We're in This Together", the title track, "No, You Don't", "La Mer", "Into the Void", and "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" (as you may be able to tell, I prefer the first disc).
Additionally, I relate more to its concept and find it more appealing to listen to and having more emotion than TDS.
The exception from TDS is "Hurt".
(Note: I really dislike "Star... Inc." and don't feel like it fits the rest of the album at all)
@Weezer
Yep, I've already accepted the fact that you have the right to be wrong.
Interestingly, I may have my preference of this album for some of the same reasons as The Fragile.
@'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
I have not yet heard the album. I have the chance to listen to it over Spotify, but I'm not going to; I'm choosing to wait until I get the album on vinyl, hopefully for Christmas (but I'll buy it myself if I don't).
Why?
I believe vinyl is truly the only way at least I can listen to GY!BE. An obvious exception is made for the CD version of F♯ A♯ ∞, which I listen to as well as the vinyl version.
It'd be fun to see which version of F♯ A♯ ∞ people prefer, but I think most people have only heard the CD version.
And as for album of the year? Why, probably this.

You've got quite a variety of tastes. I like Frank Ocean and Death Grips, as well as BADBADNOTGOOD, Milton Banana Trio, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Múm, Jupiter, felix, The Lighthouse and the Whaler, Gordon Bok (<3), The Real Tuesday Weld, Caravan Palace, Metacomet (<3), Björk (<333), YACHT (<33), and more..

I prefer the heavier sound of Downward. I think the synthy sound of The Fragile sounds a bit obnoxious to me. I also find Downward more consistant, and unlike you I prefer the themes on Downward.
I honestly don't bother with vinyl. I understand why people prefer it, and the quality benefits, it's just that CD's are more convenient.
@dontbombiraq: 15 favorite bands would be: Radiohead, Sigur Ros, The Beatles, Massive Attack, The Clash, At the Drive-In, Nirvana, Slayer, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, Opeth, Wu-Tang Clan, Minor Threat, and Ramones.

Meh, The Fragile doesn't seem that synthy to me. But whatever.
It's also sort of hard to separate them, because Reznor said that they kind of go together as one large story; it descends downward, goes up to about the middle of TF, and then goes back down again. It's interesting.
And yeah I guess the heaviness is probably part of it; I don't like heavy music that much.
And I'm not so concerned with the quality; it's more that it's a different listening experience. It's a bit hard to explain. There's only some bands where it's like "YES I NEED TO LISTEN TO THAT ON VINYL" and GY!BE happens to be one of them for me (still excepting the aforementioned CD which has different music than the vinyl).
(don't get me started on cassettes... that's another different listening experience reserved for some '80s bands like the Cure and their album Pornography)

I think the only one I'm really qualified on is Radiohead;
OK Computer is better than Kid A, but personally I prefer The Bends.
