CAPTCHA With no Noticeable User Input

I've been seeing a spam problem recently, and I thought back to when I saw a forum mod that had a CAPTCHA where you just move a mouse. Maybe we could use something like that to stop spambots? How would that work?

Re: CAPTCHA With no Noticeable User Input

It'd need to be something complicated, since a basic macro can make the mouse move. I don't think scratch needs a CAPTCHA though, since there's very little spam

Sometimes we do have it though.

We had 9 topics (or was it users?) of commercial spam a few days back. The reduce of spam is still better than all the spam.

There's more than you think; it just gets removed.  wink

Still, I'm not entirely sure such a system is necessary. How does it work, by detecting mouse movements on the page while browsing? What's the overhead?

Spammers can still move mouses., if they are human.

Yes, but the majority of spammers are bots, since they don't need to do much work.

I'm not sure exactly. Maybe we could find something else other than moving a mouse?

Re: CAPTCHA With no Noticeable User Input

Some spambots are adapted to solve CAPTCHA puzzles though...  sad  I have a CAPTCHA on my forums and there's still spambots.

How about RE-CAPTCHA?

Actually the majority of our spammers seem to be human, some even go so far as to try to appeal their bans from Scratch!

The idea of a CAPTCHA has been on the ST"s mind for a while, as a CAPTCHA of some sort would help slow some of the spam down. But a downside is that it could also slow down users, or it can be confusing for younger ones (particularly if the CAPTCHA system is complicated). Not to mention the difficulties that could arise with implementing it (modifying the website never is easy). I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but we just need to think about these things some more.

Funny because Harakou's signature has the word "Bot" on it.
