motion bars disappear when upload sprite?

Why do my motion bars disappear when I put my image of Super Mario into Scratch as a sprite?  My Mario image is in backgrounds.  Do I need to get it into scripts?  How do I do that?  New to Scratch.  Any help would be great!

Well, you can get the mario image downloaded, then click the button that's next to draw sprite. Then, click on the mario, and you should have mario as a sprite, not part of the background.
