I'm assuming Retina is as an upgrade from 1080p, as 1080p is as an upgrade from 720p, right?
Yes, much better than 1080p. The iPad 4 has 264 pixels per inch...which basically fits four pixels where one used to fit.

Wow! On the apple website once, I saw a video in which it showed that the 17" computer had more pixels than my 40" HDTV had 0.0 (at least I think so, that or the same, in which that is still a large amount of pixels).

Retina is different for every screen size. But iPad's Retina display is around 3 times higher resolution than 1080p.
@Torby: Yep. 4 times as many pixels as even a 60" LCD TV.

Yes, the iPad 3 was released earlier this year.
What's different about it?

There is no talk about the iPad 4 because it is a pathetic product. Whoever in Apple who approved its release should really be fired. A six-month product cycle and nothing but a processor and connector refresh doesn't deserve any attention.
Windows 8 on the other hand is a complete overhaul of the Windows experience. Also, don't confuse Windows 8 and Windows RT. Windows 8 is a full OS, just with the start menu replaced by metro. Windows RT is designed to run on ARM processors and isn't able to run standard Windows apps, or any app not on Microsoft's store.
Also, the retina display is hype for normal consumers. I am not even sure that the retina display is even the future for non-apple companies, seeing as most companies have been content to put an awful 1366*768 resolution. This is tech not needed except for pros doing video or photo editing for a living. Text on the retina display is chunkier than on the non-retina, and I am perfectly content with my iPad 2 resolution, but I would prefer a more standard 1920*1200 resolution or something as opposed to the arbitrary "retina." The same goes for computers as well. The battery life goes down on the 3 as well due to needing extra power, and they push the limits of what GPUs today can actually handle. Give me 1080p, not retina.

Not just any processor refresh... an A6X, the best ARM SoC ever made
And I know all about the difference between RT and 8. I just hope that those people who buy the Surface RT know about the difference as well

Come on, this is a tablet. 75% of users will probably just use their iPad for Safari, Angry Birds, and Facebook. This is an ultraportable tablet, not a professional video editing machine or a hardcore gaming machine. I challenge you to find a game that is unplayable on the A5 on my iPad 2. NOVA 3, a 1.8GB FPS with epic graphics is playable. Apple needs to focus less on the processor and more on things like camera (awful), wireless connectivity (disgraceful) and RAM (minuscule).
Also see my edit.

Battery life going down because of retina? I don't think so. The iPad 4 still gets 13 hours+ of battery life.

It'll work just fine on your iPad 2 (I've got one too). However, it's not about things working r not working, it's about improvements. The faster the processor, the faster everything is, and who doesn't want things to load faster?

And especially with multitasking (have you tried swiping left and right with 4 fingers on your iPad?), those specs can be used in real day-to-day activities.

What's all this hate towards the iPad 4 for?
Was it released too early? Yes. However, it doesn't matter. It's nice because for the same price you get some upgrades (not significant, but who won't take 'em?). And there's no harm in it because it's not being advertised as a new product and the iPad three isn't for sale so nobody can complain about buying their iPad 3 the day before the iPad 4 coming out when they could have saved $100 is they would have waited a day.
There's nothing negative to say about the upgrade from 3 to 4 itself. There's not much positive, but you can't criticize it a ton either.

Not really. CPU doesn't affect loading. As I said, they need more RAM to hold more data, not more CPU power. It's annoying for me to have a project in iMovie, go to Chrome to download some pictures, then need to reload all of iMovie. Also annoying is to go on Reddit, open a bunch of tabs, then need to wait for them to reload because the RAM is insufficient.

iPad 3 and 4 have 1GB of RAM.
iPad 2 has 512MB.

Not gonna argue, it won't change your mind.....
Anyway, I think that the Transformer Pad Infinity is better than a Win8/RT tablet or the iPad 4. Tegra3 and Android Jelly Bean combined is a force to be reckoned with.

Windows 8 uses iPad 4 as an ARMCHAIR. I personally believe that Windows 8 is much better. You can have Windows 8 Tablets, Towers, and Laptops, but iOS is strictly limited to tablets. Plus, you can play PC and Xbox 360 games on the fly with Windows 8 Tablets.

Windows 8 is fine. Windows RT is NOT.

Not to mention the fact that iOS is meant as a light-weight, non-heavy-duty OS with a lot of polish, while Windows 8 is meant to be a fully-functioning OS.

Windows 8 tablets? Yes. Windows RT? No. Is the Surface RT a Windows 8 tablet? No.
I respect the transformer pad, but I have tried it, and it seems a little clunky. Plus it runs Android, which isn't well known for having a lot of stability, or being very smooth.
Remember the tablet is for extreme portability. If you want a little less portability, why not just get a properly thin laptop like an Air? Or a Vaio Z if you are the Windows kinda guy. For the Tablet, the screen matters. Transformer doesn't have a very good screen (not as high resolution), whereas tablets like the iPad and the Nexus 10 do.
But with fragmentation, not many Android apps can take advantage of the high resolution screen of devices like the Nexus 10.
This is why the iPad ultimately wins, tablet wise.
Hybrid-wise, I don't know. Maybe the surface, maybe the transformer, maybe something else.

Surface Windows 8 (released in January)? Yes.

my take on this:
Surface is a tablet that looks like a laptop
Surface pro is a laptop that looks like a tablet
:S
i tried one of these once, its too fat for a Tablet and too annoying (cant use on lap, heavy screen) for a laptop

Android is a lot better IMO. It is stable itself, as long as you don't screw something up badly. It also runs well on any decent device. (for Jelly Bean, I would say that any dual-core CPU and 512MB of RAM would do the trick) Not to mention it is 95% open source, and infinitely more customizable.
Some people care more about portability than others. I don't really mind if a tablet is half an inch (like 2 cm for people who go by metric) instead of a quarter. I would prefer the half-inch one in fact (would fit hand better). I can understand if someone would want it to be as thin as possible though.
I also don't care if the screen is Retina or some other high-end technology. As long as the pixels don't look like legos, I'm ok. (For a 10" device, anything above 1366x768 or so).
I just want something that can surf the internet and play games well, on the go.
