Why is Scratch Scratch?

I would just like to ask why Scratch is called Scratch. I see the point of having a cat... cause cats really do scratch a lot... I thought it would be a better idea to make it revolve around the beaver because that is MIT's Mascot isnt it? I like the name, I was just wondering XD
