Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

It would be very cool, if there were a BYOP version without Elements. Sure, Elements is cool. But you can mess up a lot with that...

new BYOB 3 Trailer

Brian Harvey and I have been extending BYOB with some pretty advanced computer science concepts like first class procedures (including closures) and first class lists (including lists of lists). We'll be posting a public alpha version shortly. In the meantime, you can watch Brian's trailer

   http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/bharvey/995971

and download the full movie to learn some exciting stuff!

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

i found out the problem for the i recieve boolean block #E is a hat block code so even if you put the code for boolean it will cause an error because #E means a hat block

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

Would it be possible to have a block like the "play sound ___ and wait" block... except actually be "play sound ____ UNTIL _______"? This way, the sound will actually stop playing once the condition is met in the block.

For instance, "play sound (Stayin' Alive) UNTIL [Sprite1 touching Sprite2]"
So when Sprite1 touches Sprite2, the song "Stayin' Alive" stops playing in the middle.

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

Hi nikk29,

play sound __ until <>. Hmm, that would be cool. This will not (yet) be possible with the imminent BYOB 2.99 release, but maybe later on. We just started out with the concept of first-class-ness, introducing first class lists and first class blocks. Of course, once you start enjoying this way of programming there's nothing that can stop you from wishing for more first-class data types. Just imagine if we could have first class pictures, sounds (that's your idea here), sprites, pens and even threads!

So, while you won't be able to create this particular block in BYOB I'd like to encourage you to try what we call "first-class" objects, and stay posted, because there will be more of this in the future!

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

fanofcena, Scratch2Exe can only compile Scratch or BYOB projects. If you take the Squeak source code of Scratch and make your own additions to it, like your own blocks, projects created with that version will not run in Scratch or BYOB, and cannot compile with Scratch2Exe.

I thought Scratch2EXE just opened scratch straight to presentation mode then when you closed it it closed scratch.

Basically that's how it works, yes. But Scratch2Exe has it's own built-in Scratch interpreter (actually it's BYOB), which it needs and compiles together with the project you're distributing, so you don't have to have Scratch installed on the system you running the /stand-alone/ executable on.

No, BYOB 3 has got it's own integrated compiler.

So the scratch2exe will only work with scratch and chirp and older versions of BYOB. Makes sense.
