I think Scratch should censor words before they even have a chance to be published online. I mean the game automaticly censors swear words in the say, think, and all text blocks / boolians/ and other bricks!

What if you needed to have a chat program auto-ban people who use a swear? If the "If input = <insert bad word>" had only "****', "****" as the text (the stars, not the curses), then you wouldn't be able to see if they actually chatted a bad word, or just some stars.

its easier just to flag stuff
seriously we cant protect our children from every bad word. if they dont see it here they will see it on google or the news or anywhere. swear words arent a big deal

Still, it's still important to keep the site kid-friendly, even if some other ones aren't. Swear words actually are a big deal, because if a parent sees a swear word on this site, they might make their kid stop using this site.
@Molybdenum: no, that's a bad idea, because people would see the words if they looked at the code.

They will see probably 1/200 chance if you search something not including inappropriate stuff and swear words are a big deal if a 5 yr old sees it and searches it up on google.
Then they will see bad stuff.
Plus, just flagging it may be too late...

When 2.0 comes out a lot of parent's are going to want to stop their children using the site anyway, simply because of the new features, and as Wes64 said, They're not that big of a deal and many children will already know swear words.
Googling something and having a page with a swear word come up is not going to traumatise a child like something else might. Projects that include stuff like this get flagged. If it's good enough for stuff like that, why do we need a separate system for text? why are there no suggestions to get every image uploaded checked?

Just flag it.
If you go onto the internet, don't expect your 7 year old to be safe from all things.

Flagging bad stuff is good, but it would be even better if it was auto flagged if it contained bad language.

You don't know that parents want children to stop playing scratch because of new features ( which sounds unreasonable to me ) and we do not want children to learn swear words from this site, if a children learns swear words, we do not want them to blame it on Scratch, because parents might get mad. Children will eventually learn them, but how i learn them was by asking my mom Again, projects including bad stuff might be too late for flagging, say for example, a child looks at the project and wants to flag it, but sees the bad words.
Anyways, why is so many people opposing? This is just a suggestion, not a debate! I want to make Scratch better, and people are saying its much easier to flag. What do we have to lose?

I think many parents will be concerned if they see their child in a chatroom, regardless of the content. And you seemed to neglect that this would still make projects that contain bad content in need of flagging, despite their obviously worse effect on children.

If parents do not want their child to see stuff like that, don't let them have internet connection. No matter WHERE you go, something is gonna come up. Simple as that. Of course you don't want Scratch to have bad words, but why completely change the layout of the site and system to prevent things that can be flagged? Kids already know swears. And if they don't, you shouldn't let 5 year-olds on the site. Even if they, are, what are they gonna do? Ask what the word means? Google it?

Just because they know them doesn't mean they like them.

Oh. I assumed that the bad words would all be converted to "*" while they were uploaded. Silly me.

I just looked at some stuff in ScratchR, and currently, it doesn't allow profanity in the project title or notes when the project is uploaded.

1. ABSOLUTELY NO SWEAR WORDS ON SCRATCH WEBSITE, NEVER!
2. Of course people will google bad words if they dont know what they mean.

And what kind of user does not know bad words?
A five year old?
Who lets a five year old on the site?

-- nice the point is that Scratch does not want to make people learn those bad words or even more complicated words not just the s and f but also some more. So if 5-8 yr old does not know any swear words, they wont learn from scratch. Close request because I dont want this argument to be out of control. And I will ignore comments about this forum on one of my games. Thanks!
And thanks for all those supports.
