Well an actual free antivirus doesn't exist for Mac, as such, and I wouldn't use it, as the realtime protection and stuff just slows stuff down. I use Nortorn mac scanner to scan my computer something like every few months, just to get rid of some PC viruses, so I don't pass on viruses to PC users. It's available on the Mac App Store.
@samid11: Maybe I should make a screen recording of me clicking it, if I ever get it? Because it doesn't affect Macs

That would be cool

It wouldn't destroy it, right?

No. Not if it's an iPhone...
Nah, just kidding. As long as it isn't a Windows PC, and the virus is a PC virus, no harm will come from it

Also, did I say anywhere that the virus is only for Windows?
It's possible it's a Java program or something.

If that's true...
Anyway, if you actually got pass the virus download part, I'm pretty sure it will just be a blank page.
So my post was ignored, in the midst of the Mac/Windows war?

Yeah, sorry.

This CNET article seems to imply it's a PC only virus

It said it shows that message for PCs.
Macs can still be spread vectors.

Exactly. Just like mosquitoes carry the malaria virus without dying from it, Macs carry PC viruses without getting affected by them. The viruses don't actually contaminate files themselves, they just stay in the file they were originally in. This is why I scan my Mac rarely, but regularly.

My point is that even though you might not get locked out of your computer, you will still get blamed by other people if they got the message from you, which is still bad. In fact, nobody will trust you anymore if they think you were the one responsible for getting locked out of their computer.

If the virus does not work on Macs, there's no way it can use my contact list etc. etc.

The article only said the message only shows on Windows. It never said that the spreading doesn't occur on other systems, because it might use Java or some similar cross-platform language, and the Skype API is universal.

If the virus is powerful enough to do that on a Mac? Why not put the message on Macs as well? That doesn't make sense. This virus is definitely PC-only.

It's a bit harder to mess with startup files than it is to use the Skype API.
So, they probably wanted it to spread faster, so they made the easy part (sending the message using the Skype API) universal using a universal API, but the actual locking down part only for Windows, because that is much harder to code for either platform, and they wanted to use their energy to attack 90% of users instead of 8%.

You could be right, but I don't think it's likely.

I think you two should stop arguing. If he wants to click it and risk it, let him do that.
If his computer does break/others' do, that's his fault, not yours. If nothing happens to him, so what?

Only partly. There are currently no viruses in existence that can get into my Mac.
That's a pretty bold thing to say unless you've manually found every single virus in the world and attempted to download them
