This is our composition collaboration. Otherwise known as the CompCollab.
This is between AgentRoop and kayybee, and these two users only, unless otherwise specified. So random person, do not think you can just click in and start helping.
So, I think we should decide what our first song should be. How about an 8-bit song?
HAHA JK. So here are some choices:
-the song for like the first level of a video game similar to this
-a scary, (not spooky) but nerve-wracking song, i guess? like epic still like this or this
-a completely epic song, such as this (and this one is a video of the orchestra playing, amazingly)
So choose, and if you don't see a choice that you want, just make up your own. These are just some ideas.
And BTW, you should get used to Super Mario Galaxy songs cause I'll be linking to a lot of them.
My software:
Garageband
Musescore
Finale Notepad 2008
anything else that I might want to download if it's made for mac
Here's some musical information on me, in case we ever want to record ourselves playing.
Piano-6 years
Steel Pan-6 months, but I can play almost anything with practice
Misc. Instruments: harmonica, keyboard, tinwhistle (in C), ocarina, conch shell(?), rainstick(?), half-broken kalimba
And I used to play the flute and trumpet (and timpani and bells and drums and everything else like that) but I don't have the instruments at home.
So what song do you want to start with?

LOL. I was like, what do you not understand about NO ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS?

I think i like the first choice, I like to compose happy-sounding pieces. I've never played super Mario galaxy, but I really like the music!
I've never really tried this, but let's try to list around 10 adjectives each to describe how we want the song. That will make it easier to narrow down our song, so it's more direct.
Tell me if you oppose to any of these
I'll start with some: grand, majestic, epic, orchestral, major
Okay, let's both make a chord progression first and see where to put each of ours. (intro, melody, main melody, etc.)
Or if you just have a great melody in your head tell me it somehow (notes or sound file)
BTW if you want to hear a great song here: SMG2 Credits

I like the adjective that you used to describe it. Maybe we could add optimistic, exciting, and innovative?
I always use the same chord progression throughout the whole song, because I'm not good at changing themes or deals, so I'd like to try that out.
For ideas of a good chord progression, how about (considering we are in the key of c) C, F, a, and G? It's an overused chord progression but I like the way it sounds. This is just an idea. I'll play a bit on my guitar or piano and see if I have any better ideas.

I also like C, Em, F, G. That one I try to use a lot.
Perhaps let's try to write something with these. But instead of using our own, we switch chord progressions and write a melody for the other one.
Let's try key Db or Ab. Or both?
And 4/4 time.
Try to get one-two "sentences" as a sound file, so we can see our progress. Just write a bunch of melodies, and choose the best one. Sound good?

Okay, instead, try using this:
C, Em, F, G, Am, F, Em, G
It's a combination of both of ours.
I'll choose a random chord progression from this list I have, okay?
Sure! Sounds like a good idea. I'll get to work on writing a few measures with that chord progression and see how it works. By the way, I use MuseScore and synesthesiagame, I write my compositions in MuseScore and present them in the other.

I'm a little confused. How do you use synthesia to present the songs?
I thought synthesia was like guitar hero for keyboards?
You can make the computer play it for you, and then use a screen recorder to make a video or mp3 file.

Oh! Really!
That's really handy since all my musescore created ones have fairly bad sound quality.
I also thought of something. I wonder if i can export and import into garageband, and play it...
And also about the song: If you feel that you don't like the chord progression, or if you have a melody, or feel it's not fair because i'm not using a chord progression (cause my songs fail when I do that), don't be afraid to just say so and use your own. I just wanted to suggest that to you in case you wanted to use it.
Here's my melody, I'll try to improve it. I'm just putting it here so I don't forget
Ab Bb C Eb | Gb F Db Eb | Gb F Db Eb Ab | Bb Ab C Bb
Ab Bb C Eb | Gb F Db Eb | Gb F Db Eb Ab C | Db C Bb Ab
Don't feel rushed, I usually take 2 weeks to make a song, so this is actually pretty fast. Take your time if you need it.
Any other questions? (and don't feel that I'm the boss and you have to listen to me or anything, I just want to give suggestions to you, so if you need/want something, just tell me)

I tried composing a melody, but it didn't turn out too well. I'll try again later today as I'm busy with homework and such.
I usually write melodies with 4 chords in a progression, and each melody is 4 measures long, so I'll see if I can do 8 chords or if i have trouble, I'll end up doing 4.
Do you have any reccomendations for a software that imports MIDI's and makes them sound like real instruments?

Sorry, I haven't found time to work on the song yet. btw, I just installed a trial of a software called mixmaster, and it is incredible! I can export from musescore and make my songs sound amazing!

Don't try to rush the song, but try to get something that really sounds moving and like majestic and epic and stuff. And feel free to use any chord progression you'd like.
I attempted to do that, it sounds a bit too lighthearted. Maybe if I make it slower and add stringed instruments. Here's what I've got so far.

Sorry I haven't been doing much with the song, I'm still working on meshing them together, but schoolwork (a lot) and taekwondo and piano is getting in the way.
I like the "Violin Thing" a lot but it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the song. Especially it's time signature. I suggest you write a separate song using it

It's fine, I've been pretty busy too. Tons of math hw.
The violin thing (couldn't think of a title) probably isn't good for using because of its time signature. I'll keep writing songs, and can you post what you've got so far soon?
