What is the file type of the sounds in scratch?

Do you mean supported? I think it supports MP3 and WAV (and if I'm not mistaken, WMA too). MP3 will always have the lowest file size, if the same file is in these different formats.
Or if you're asking what file type the example sounds are? Some are MP3's, some are WAV. Typically the longer sounds are MP3's.
