Variable display on RaspberryPi issue

What can we do to get this (or a different solution that achieves the same result) into the 1.4 codebase so we can quickly roll it out on the RaspberryPi as a proper;y sanctioned Scratch image?
As you can imagine, Scratch on the RaspberryPi is THE introduction to programming for youngsters and it would be great to get this sorted out before many more notice the issue
