Switch to background ?? Not found

I have recently download the Scratch form my son to my Imac but I'm unable to find the switch to background command in the LOOKS section

Does anyone have know the reason to this?

if you're looking at a sprite it does not appear, only if you are on the background itself.

Thanks for that, but i'm still confused. I created the background via costumes, hence it makes a new sprite..is this right or do we make backgrounds another way?

Sorted i just pressed the stage button next to the sprites and hey presto problem solved
