Brand New to Scratch

Hi, I will be teaching Grades 7/8, and would like ideas for beginning projects.  Almost all are new to Scratch. Thanks!

Re: Brand New to Scratch

I actually was introduced to Scratch during a summer program a few years ago, and one of the things they assigned to us was to make a game involving a fish in a cracked tank. The water level must constantly lower itself, and the students had to design a sort of "alert system" so that when the water level got to a certain point, more "water" would be added to the tank. For extra credit we could add options such as feeding the fish, having the fish move around the tank, et cetera.

Hope this helps!

Re: Brand New to Scratch

I think that it would be better to let them think up their own ideas.

But if you don't set a goal for them, sometimes they just give up and do the simplest thing possible.
Y'know, that would actually be an interesting discussion: is it better to give them an equally challenging assignment, or have them assign themselves?
Decisions, decisions.

I changed my mind because of your post, and I think you should give the assignments, and that they should be different ones.(if they were the same assignment they could all copy each other)
some of my ideas(for people that are very new to scratch):
A)a simple platformer
B)a pet game(?)
C)a short animation
D)a algorithm to solve simple math problems
E)a simple calculator

That's a good idea: give them a choice out of multiple assignments.
+1
