A program cannot "sense" when something is read. Thats just as far-fetched as trying to get your computer to eat ramen noodles through its floppy drive. It cant be done (sorry).
if you didnt know you can press the little red [x] to the left of each message to delete it manually.

I'd quite like a computer that could do that. but on topic you could sense when the user clicks the link, and when they click off, but still no support, since you can delete them anyways

Um it sort of can, just make a new table in the database which stores the user, message, and whether it's been read. Or even better, just do it when you click on it.
Even so, I don't support.

Definitely don't support. I just got a message that's a reply to my comment and tells me information about some game music. If that was deleted, I might have an awful time trying to find it again.
