I think that when a gallery is featured, it should have its own row on the front page. This would mean reducing the amount of featured galleries to 1, but since a new gallery is featured about every month it shouldn't be a big deal. On that row, three random projects from the gallery would be shown like in SDS.
This would
- bring attention to projects in the gallery
- show a larger variety of projects on the homepage
- allow older projects to be seen by newer users
- encourage more people to make and use galleries
There would need to be some restrictions.
- If the owner of the gallery has their own projects in said gallery, those will not be shown on the front page. (to prevent people from using the galleries wrongly)

When i saw the title, i thought you were talking about having featured galleries as a homepage row, the way 2.0 does it.
