Aviary

Good news and bad news.

I'll start with the good news, because without it you won't be able to understand the bad news and most likely won't care.

The good news: There's an amazing website with all these amazing apps for artists to use. They have everything from vector editors to music-making things. It's called Aviary. I know 4 years ago there was a bit of a commotion about it on the forums, so some of you might know what I'm talking about. You can find it at advanced.aviary.com but before you go there, read the rest... If anyone came here from my link in my recent project, you will probably have seen my project "Dragons," which is only a small taste of what these apps can do. I made both the song and all 3 dragons in Aviary.  Aviary is excellent when you use it together with scratch, since you can animate all of the awesome creations you made and play the song you composed in the background. It's even good for voice editing. This sounds too good to be true...

Well it is true. But it won't be for long. You see, all of these apps are closing on September 15th. All that will be left is the photo editor for smartphones.

That leaves three plans for action:

You can either pretend you never read this thread and get on with your life, which is what I'm predicting most of you will do (And my predictions are usually pretty accurate),

Make a ton of stuff with Aviary apps now, and keep it all in the closet, which I will do, although I also have a third plan,

Or learn javascript and html, grab yourself some sourcecode, and get to work. Maybe I should have posted this in advanced topics...

So... Half the purpose of this topic is to raise awareness (better two months than nothing) for anyone who wants to try these awesome apps out, and the other half is to ask if anyone is willing to help me in this project I've taken on. I expect a lot of no's, but I'm a bit of a pessimist (especially where large projects not for the faint-hearted hosted on scratch are concerned. I've experienced much failure in that field.).

That's all. Post if you're interested. Leave now if you're not.

Re: Aviary

I got the photo editor! It's good, so I don't know why they're shutting down the other stuff.

Re: Aviary

I once made a waffle/biscuit with no source images in Peacock. I don't know how.

They're made in flash, right? Doesn't that mean we could grab the .swfs?

Why are they closing it? That seems like a waste.

Re: Aviary

I found the .swf for roc, but we'd need the soundbanks to get it to do anything.

EDIT:

Discard this idea, the image editors just don't load as SWF files and the sound editors don't work when they do load.

They're made in flash, but I don't know how to get the .swfs (if it's even possible). I do have the sourcecode, but not the other stuff it needs (images, sounds, things like that).

They're closing because they're made in Flash and everyone is ranting about Flash player.

It's actually pretty easy to get individual sounds. It would take hours to download the entire soundbank though.

It is kinda, I mean just closing because of flash? That's pretty harsh.

They say they are closing it because they can't afford to have people spend time updating all 7 apps each time a new version of Flash comes out. It also takes up a lot of server space, apparently. And more server space = more $$$ payed to the server host.

Yeah. I can understand the monetary problem, but they really could just give someone else the programs and website and let them take care of it. I'm sure there are plenty who would be willing, the challenge is to find someone who won't make people pay for it, because then it would become pointless.

Yeah, I agree. Handing it over to someone who can translate it to Java or something seems reasonable.

I know some pretty basic Java, and I just bought a JavaScript book (Guess why?). My mom just so happens to have an HTML book that she never uses too. The main challenge, though, is getting all the behind-the-scenes stuff like the sounds and images. Most of which is easy enough to get, but it takes a LOT of time to download it. Then there could also be html pages that you just can't get, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Since no one is posting in this thread, I'm going to stop paying attention to it. Just so you know. If you have anything important to say on the topic, tell me on one of my projects.

Re: Aviary

They could do what all the other small online companies are doing and sell their services to Google. It is sad though, because although I've never used Aviary much, these small online companies are very important.

This reminds me what happened to picnik  hmm

No clue about picnik. Apparently they're not so small though. They're closing their Flash-based apps, but they have a photo-editing app out for smartphones and things like that and it's getting them quite a bit of popularity. I'd give the software to Google (At least it's not being wasted).

I have also sent an email to Aviary support to see if I can rehost the advanced suite. I'll post some more if I get a reply.
