Do you think media affect the way kids act?

THIS IS NOT A FLAME TOPIC. DO NOT FIGHT OVER THIS.

http://voices.yahoo.com/the-effects-med … 13118.html

I, personally, think it depends on the child.

I think so.

And unfortunately many people use TV, Games and other media as 'Babysitters'.

Agreed. It isn't just movies, it's tv shows and games. mainly video games. The other day, i was at Gamestop to pre-order Mario for the 3ds. I saw a kid who looked like he was in preschool or in the early years of elementary and he was buying BLACK OPS.

My heart cried a little.

It's the majority now. Game ratings just don't matter anymore.

And I also agree that video games are the worst. Because of their interactiveness, it really does affect children a lot.

Yea, I realise that. And music too. Let's not flame, but seriously, a lot of music today doesn't deserve to be called music, or even moosic for that matter.

Yeah. I'm the only kid in MY WHOLE GRADE last year that still played Mario.

Everything else is bad too. I hate how little kids act all mature.

I've seen arguments to show that the interactivity allows anger to be used on pixels, and avoid it causing an issue in real life.

I am personally unaffected but if someone is, I think it's a deeper psychological issue than the fact that they played a video game. They probably already had problems and the videogame triggered them to do something wrong.

sad  that's horrible

i mean, i'm 12-ish or so and i play skyrim, but first of all i don't play for the violence, i play for the rpg aspect and beautiful world - and for me it's the opposite - i honestly feel like my negative energy went out after doing VIRTUAL violence, and i don't feel like i want to do something irl, unless it's something i know will do no purposeful harm, like a gun range or something

plus i can handle "m for mature" or "r for restricted" movies/video games anyways, and it depends on the game/movie - many pg-13 movies today have more violence/drugs/etc. than some r movies

Take "The King's Speech", for example. Because saying the f word and some other words ooobviously means that a movie is much more graphic and child-inappropriate than violence, sexualization, and drugs.

Ugghhhhhh

I mean, some kids take M games/R movies too seriously, but I know that they're just movies/games. And I know there's a lot of other kids like me who can handle this, not saying I am above all other children as far as maturity goes.

@animeboy: Not the biggest fan of Mario, I like Pokemon way more, but seriously? Mario is one of the most classic video games, I don't consider a gamer a gamer unless they played any main Mario game at least once.

But seriously a preschooler playing Black Ops I can't  sad   sad   sad

Re: Do you think media affect the way kids act?

I was watching a documentery  on serial killers and I think it said something very wise on the subject-(HEAVILY PARAPHRASED)
'I don't think it makes children go 'I saw that on television- I'm going to go do that'. Not most anyway. but for some they will see that on the news and think 'I can do that. That would make me feel better, like it does for them.'
so the media doesn't MAKE children follow it's suit
but some CHOOSE TO

That still doesn't justify my 6 year old neighbor playing Black Ops and enjoying it simply because it is violent
but his mom really doesn't care

Re: Do you think media affect the way kids act?

I really think it depends on the child and how mature they are to handle it, but all in all it doesn't really affect their behavior, it's just propraganda that the news is throwing around, IMHO.

Music might in a few cases, but for the most part, I think it's probably the weakest of media in terms of content and influence. In a movie, TV show, or video game, it's a lot more graphic and visual and (in the case of a video game) you can be the one controlling it.

I may have misinterpreted your post; it also looks like you're saying that a lot of recent music doesn't count as music by your definition. That isn't really relevant though, so I'll keep out of that discussion.

Well, lots of artist do sing songs about drugs and all that, and many kids in my school think it's "cool" to listen to those things and think drugs are fine. In 6th grade, when we had to take Social Awareness, we had a free time where we could do whatever. Some listened to their iPods, and some quietly sang along. All of them were listening to drug-endorsing songs or songs with curse words every 5 seconds.

I think there are certain games, TV shows and movies that can affect the way kids act. (To be honest, sometimes I have to watch out so I don't soak in some of the bad stuff I watch.)

I hate modern music in general. Beach Boys and Beatles FTW!

So, do you hate new music or new songs, or both?

Parents who do not discipline their children and let them be affected by media should end up behind bars. I cannot stand cruel children.

Oh, yeah, forgot about that. Actually, I can only remember ever listening to a few songs that were about drugs, and they were by bands like the Beatles and the Velvet Underground. Still, I suppose it could be a problem; I don't really have too much experience with mainstream music. And there's also the fact that definitely not all modern music is inappropriate, although it is true that more mainstream music is now than before.

And while curse words are inappropriate, they're hardly much compared to *, violence, and drugs. That's why I said it was one of the weakest media.

Re: Do you think media affect the way kids act?

Meet Johnny. Johnny is twelve. Johnny goes to middle school and is in seventh grade. Johnny is totally rad. He knows he’s rad because he watches cool movies and plays cool games. Johnny got to watch R-rated movies in the third grade. He is aware this makes him very mature for his age, and therefore he can do anything! Have you seen the latest movies? Well, Johnny has. He’s seen all of them. Violence is no longer all that exciting. That blood and guts look really fake. Those screams are just actors. Johnny fears nothing!
Johnny knows a lot about drugs and stuff because he sees them in the movies. Johnny jokes about them with his friends a lot. That’s because he’s so cool. Would Johnny do drugs? No, of course not! Drugs are bad for you. But Johnny is a rebel, so he can talk about them. He’s played lots of video games, and enjoys stabbing and shooting virtually. It isn’t like he’s actually hurting people, but it’s still so awesome. And he has so much experience with the real world by facing a cold reality in these amazing games. This causes Johnny to gain popularity for his maturity and awesomeness. Man, Johnny is such a cool dude.

Basically my opinion written like that very sarcastically and badly because I just felt like it
