Well, first off, I was not sure where I was to place this topic, but since I am creating a topic I put it in the "Things I'm Making and Creating" section. I know great reasoning. (Could a mod please move this to the right section ;D)
Now to get to the real point of this topic.
Hello Scratch community, Recycle here. Some of you may not know me, I started scratching about 3 years ago (/me goes to check... actually 2 and a half... but lets say 3). I was brand new to the internet, never knew what it really was. My computer teacher introduced me to this place, and I fell in love with it. And that's where my thank you comes in.
Scratch really helped shape who I am. I am not kidding. Before scratch I was always interested in science and math, those were my strong points. When I found scratch, I discovered the fun of programming. Not only that, I found the fun of being apart of a community, something that can help others. When I first started scratch, I knew nothing. I remember clicking the button called "Forum", and seeing what looked like charts. (Dont ask me, thats just what I thought of.) I posted a thread, but had no way of seeing it, because I did not know how to navigate such a thing. I then found out what it was, and met the real community that was scratch. Back then, this place was as friendly as it could be. The users were very nice and welcomed me in.
Through this whole time, I was making what are called "Projects", trying to reach scratch fame. I found that I liked to make projects that gave you images, images that you could interpret into anything that you would like. It was more of an outlet, a thing that I could do when I was bored, upset, or inspired. Eventually, I got my wish, featured, top loved, curated, (was a curator myself), and top viewed. But after my peak of fame I guess you could call it, I came back to the forums. It was a great place to have conversations. And I remember coming across a thread about something called HTML. This really started me on the path that I am on today.
I thought that programming was something like scratch, with a GUI, with movable objects and things of that nature. Then, I looked into this HTML thing more. I did not know it at the time, but Scratch in all reality, was preparing me to advance on. As I started to learn more of programming, this place began to change. Sad really, it was such a nice place.
Right now I am designing websites using PHP, CSS, HTML, Jquery, and all that good stuff. I am mastering C#, while making a game with Blender and the Unity game engine. I would have been able to do none of this, if it were not for Scratch. I felt like it was my job to make sure that all of you who want to program, know that this is the right place to start. I would not understand computers, programs, the internet, basically everything on a computer if it was not for Scratch.
I hope that you can use what you have learned here to help you in other things.
And one last thing.... Meow!

This is what Scratch is all about.

That's an awesome speech! And I'm so glad that your experience with Scratch was so enjoyable and productive - I'll be sure and forward your thoughts to the rest of the Scratch Team.
Since this topic is discussing "things you are creating or exploring outside of Scratch, like art, music, programming languages" (see the Forum Guidelines) - this forum applies.

I'm pretty sure I've seen you before, not sure when or where but I have.
Yes, Scratch really does help before learning another language. Just now I decided to learn Python (about 3 years after starting with Scratch
), and since I already have logic stuff down thanks to Scratch, it's so much easier. Scratch is definitely the place to start if you're completely new to programming, it's really easy to learn and use, and just as versatile.
Nice to hear you've come so far, too - I hope I can say the same about myself one time.

To this day I don't know what the 49 is for.
BECAUSE I KNOW IT HAS A MEANING.

Hey I remember you. Although you won't remember me, I only know you because for some reason I enjoy looking through old topics. :3
Nice thread.

I agree with all this. Scratch really gave me my start.

This pretty much applies with me too, just replace 2 1/2 years with 4 1/2 (dang I've been here for a long time, most of the '07ers and '08ers are gone D: ).
And I remember you, welcome back.

Ikr, Xenotype was really bad back then, but then, we were all young and we hadn't realized the full potential of scratch yet.

yeah, scratch opened me up to the internet too, and the forums especially lead me to discover a whole new world of music that is oodles better than my teeny bopper preferences of a year or two ago

It was a whole lot better than Oprix.
The few of us left who were involved in the Scratch OS wars should either start a new one, or work together to make one awesome OS.
