I'm not gonna do another silly Top 500 thing.
Lets just discuss what genres we like!
If you can, describe what you like about the genre and give scratch-appropriate examples of bands or songs.
You may also say what your LEAST favorite are, but PLEASE. No flame wars.
My favorites:
Pop Rock
Why: It is what I like to listen to most. I like the mix of light, pop-style lyrics over a guitar type music.
Examples: The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder! Most of my favorite artists, actually.
Origins: 1960s in US and UK
Classic Rock
Why: It is also what I listen to a lot. It just feels like the classics, you know? This genre was in major popularity back when music was at its best, IMO.
Examples: The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones. Many amazing bands and artists.
Origins: 1950s started rock and roll, which evolved and spiked in popularity during 1960-1970
Hard Rock
Why: It is different from what I listen to often, but its good to listen to something heavier every once in a while.
Examples: Journey, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Europe.
Origins: Started in 1960s but there was a lot of good stuff in 1980.
Ragtime
Why: Its classic! Its about as far back as you can go before hitting classical. Its so happy, and as a pianist, I love to play it!
Examples: Scott Joplin!!!!!
Date: 1910 in the US
Jazz/Swing:
Why: Its so catchy, cool and jazzy. Its often very relaxing, and its one of my favorite styles to play on piano.
Examples: TOO MANY TO NAME!
Date: 1920-1950 in the US
Classical:
Why: I love listening to classical because it is so old! Its like a blast from the past... filled with culture. Something I like is that it can be refined and elegant to being intense and dramatic.
Examples: Some particularly famous composers are Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Handel, Chopin, Strauss, Brahms, and Gershwin.
Date: This stuff goes FAR back. We have music from the 1600s, in fact.
R&B
Why: Coming from jazz and blues, it is very rhythmic and jazzy. It is simply cool, feel-good music! Most of all, there is lots of MEANING in the songs.
Examples: Lots- Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, and Ray Charles are pretty well known.
Date: 1940-1960 in the US
Modern Alternate Rock
Why: Being anti-modern music myself, I like to see that rock is still alive in these modern times. Its refreshing to here 'Coldplay' on the radio because it lets me know that the world is not being taken over by rap, pop, and electronic music.
Examples: Coldplay
Date: 2000 until today.
Reggae
Why: It makes me happy (nothing to do with drugs, that stereotype is stupid). I like its uniqueness.
Examples: Bob Marley
Date: Started in 1960s in Jamaica, became popular in the US and UK in 1970. It is still popular today.
Ska Punk
Why: It is very upbeat, happy music. I like the reggae feel, but it is faster-paced and usually has light lyrics.
Examples: Save Ferris, Smash Mouth, No Doubt (Sadly not many Ska bands are well known.)
Date: Classic ska started in Jamaica in 1960, but its revival as 'Ska Punk' gained publicity in 1980-1990.
Least Favorites:
Country
Why: It really annoys me. Just my opinion.
Heavy Metal
Why: I don't like listening to music that hurts my ears.
Emo
Why: Makes me depressed.
Rap
Why: Don't even get me started...
Modern Pop
Why: It all sounds the same. There is no creativity anymore.
Dubstep
Why: It is obnoxious, it hurts my ears, it all sounds similar, and it doesn't require much creativity.
Disco
Why: I don't know why, but I've always found it irritating.
What about you?

Ska punk (ASOB, Bomb the Music Industry!, Streetlight Manifesto, Sublime)
Post rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky)
Indie pop (The Unicorns, The Apples in stereo, of Montreal, The Magnetic Fields)
Progressive rock (King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP)
Indie folk (Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, The Magnetic Fields)
IDM (Aphex Twin, Autechre)
Proto-goth (The Cure, Bauhaus)
Alternative (The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Weezer)
Lo-fi (Guided by Voices, Pavement)
Those are some of my favourite genres. I don't really have any least favourite genres. Even with genres that I generally don't like, there will usually be an artist that I like at least a few songs of, like with country (Johnny Cash) or hip hop (The Go! Team, Deltron 3030).

Not sure on likes. But dislikes are country, rap, modern pop, dubstep and some jazz.

The interesting thing about my taste is that I like many different genres, but only select artists from each genre. My primary favorites, however, are classic rock, especially the proggier variations (Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis), but I also like basic rock such as Queen, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin.
I don't mind metal much, as long as it has a melodic base. I like mainly traditional heavy metal (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) and glam metal (Def Leppard, Ratt, Europe, Bang Camaro).
I also found, recently, a deep love in alt-rock. I like bands like Coldplay (Viva La Vida and A Rush of Blood to the Head especially), They Might Be Giants, Keane, and Oasis.

Those don't really seem like very different genres to me... they're all pretty similar.

Those are just my favorites. Trust me, my musical palette can be very varied.

Someone once said that genres are like boxes. Its better to think outside of them.
That said, I don't "hate" any particular style. A lot of people say rap is bad, but really, there are some hip-hop artists that are artistic and creative. If you listen to songs like Kenji by Fort Minor, Mockingbird by Eminem or Any Man in America by Blue October you'll be able to see what some rappers can do.

It took a while for me to figure out you were talking about music.
Perhaps you could request a title change?
