Making Custom Costumes

How do I make the white space around an character become transparent, so that only the character itself is visible, rather than a big square of white space all around it?

if youre editing a background theres no way to do it but when editing a sprite costume you can use the fill tool along with the colour under dark pink and next to white to make things transparent
